1990 560SEL original Backer front speakers come and go

With the exception of a new fader switch the original Becker sounds system is in place and sounds really good.

The only issue is that the front speakers come and go. Sometimes they just stop working and other times they do a lot of cracking and popping as they go out.

I want to keep the car totally original so no new sound system. Once I sort out the front speaker issue life will be good.

I think the speakers are good as they sound good when they do work. I'm figuring it could be the head unit or one or both amps.

Can anyone give me clue which I should be looking at?

Sounds like a faulty connection to the amp or a grounding issue to me. Is there a particular situation when they stop working?

Or failing amps. I had this problem with mine several times. I finally gave up and replaced the becker amps with an Alpine.

New fader helped at first

Sometimes they just pop in or out. Other times it starts with a lot of very loud cracking and popping. When it was doing the cracking and popping rotating or even tapping the fader switch would make it worse. I finally bought a brand new fader. When I first installed it I got of the cracking and popping at first but then all the speakers came on and everything was perfect for several days. Now it's back to the old behavior, except that rotating or tapping the fader switch doesn't cause noise.

Finally Fixed!

At long last everything is fixed. The front speaker issue, fading in and out, was fixed by replacing one of the dash speaker with a good, used original.

The poping, cracking and static issue turned out to be a penny bouncing around inside the radio.

I pulled the radio out and removed the top thinking I might be able re-solder "cracked" connections, but there are far, far too many for an amatuer to tackle. I was about to put it back together to send off to Becker Sound USA when spotted the penny. It was just lying loose in the upper section. It had a date of 1991 so there's no telling how long it's been in there or how it got there.

I put the top back on, re-installed it and the system now works like new!
