1993 300E Stereo

I have recently replaced my 1984 190E with a 1993 300E. The 190 was so bad that i immediately upgraded a new head unit in the dash with cd. From what I have been reading, the 300E is trickier. I want a cd, preferably in dash. I am not a bass crashing nut, so the speakers I will upgrade to better quality, but not add any new. Is the trunk cd changer a better option? How does one integrate a cellphone with changer? Do all these products have to be MB? I just want a nice sounding cd option given all my highway driving. Thanks in advance for any help.

Randy

Have your Mercedes dealer show you the MB Single CD Receiver, part # Q 6 82 0410. Our adapter cable BNA-MB1 or 2.1432 will simplify your installation. If your dealer can not help you, call Burl in our parts dept. at 888 423 3537 x209. Ask for the 4602 model, which btw also works with our six and ten disc changers. Look up front view at www.beckerautosound.com/4602small.jpg

Randy,

For front speakers look for the rainbow brand, part number 231182. They are made in germany and fit perfectly the front dash mountings.

Iīve just bough a pair and the sound quality and sound stage are great. And I still use mu Becker 1431.
In US try La Jolla Audio.

Don't 1993 300E's run off of 2 ohms instead of 4 ohms, and therefore not compatible with anything else?

Hello Randy,

Problaby yes. Thatīs why there is that fader in the console. The rainbow speakers are 4 ohms. After the fader ,I beleive, it turns out in 4 ohms.

The fader has no effect on the impeadence of the speakers as it is a line level fader, before the amplifiers. The rainbows work fine with the power of the factory amps.

The worst thing that can happen by plugging nominally 4-ohm speakers into an amp rated down to 2 ohms is that you'll lose maybe 30-40% of the available watts. However, you will stress the amp less, and it may have more headroom.

Radio and Cigarette Lighter Inop

Greetings,

I just purchased a 1993 300e and both the Radio and the Cigarette lighter are not working. I checked the fuse, and the fuse was good, I used a light tester to check both sides of the fuse, perfect.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Eddie

Randy, check out the Nakamichi 45z head unit. It looks excellent in any Mercedes. They make a 35z and a 40z that have less features. I would own one but they do not read burned cds very well because the lazer is super high quality and very precise. I would take a look around www.onlinecarstereo.com to get a feel for what you want and then hunt for it on ebay.

Scott,

Aren't all 93's equipped with the split 1432 Becker? When I put on my Alpine headunit, I basically ran one pair of the speaker outs to the factory amp in the rear. The fader still works so doesn't that mean it is after the amp?

Cheers

Not all are the same is your car euro? Some cars have the same amp set up as the 190e with only one amp that runs the door subs and the speaker outputs of the stock radio goes through the sub amp then to the fader. It is usually found on the 260e's. You are refering to the cars that have two amplifiers!

Eddie,

I just had a problem like that. Check you connections behind the lighter. Mine were broken. You can either fix the lighter or bypass it. SInce I don't smoke, I did the latter. Radio is working fine now.
Good luck!

Scott,

Mine is US and has a single amp - you helped me out with this once before. It has half of the receiver in the back piggy backed on the amp. A DIN cable running from the Becker head unit to the back hooks up the two "halves". I just unhooked the rear component output plugs from the amp and plugged my speaker outs in its place. I just thought the split 1432 (with characteristic DIN cable) was found only in 92-93 models. I think there is at least another variant (I have "aktiv bass") but my understanding was that the output stages of the split configuration was in the back and plugged directly into the amps.

Cheers

Joe, Do you have pics of your installation? I have the 1432 active bass and want to swap the head unit.

Does anyone have experience with the Becker BE4602 mentioned in the thread above? It appears to be an "easy" replacement for the OEM Beckers in some Mercedes models. Does anyone have it? Happy?
Its power seems modest. Does its preamp outs allow it to power the original amps in the trunk on 1991-1993 MBs, anyone know? Price?
