Easy w123 Sub solution??
 

Greetings audio-gear heads. I have a 300CD Coupe.

I replaced the Becker with an Alpine head unit / Amp set up.


Alpine CDE-153BT
Alpine KTP-445 amp

I don't recall what speakers I installed, but all four were changed out.

What I now have is 80% great sound. Nice and clear, but no bass as you might imagine.

What's the easiest way to jam a sub into these cars? The wall in the trunk is the back of the fuel tank. I imagine that will really impact the sound. Right?

Not much room under the front seats. I've heard it messes up seat travel.
Not much room under the rear seat either.

Has anyone come up with a solution? I don't want to shake the hood, just enjoy the tunes.

I haven't test fit it yet, but my hope was to build a bracket to hold a small powered sub under the luggage shelf, in the space where the first aid kit belongs. The other thought would be to relocate the vacuum reservoir and fit one there.
The other thought was to build a subwoofer enclosure using a vintage suitcase, and store it in one of the rear wheel arches. Not expecting that to sound great, but it would at least look reasonably period-correct.

I saw a few on Crutchfield are very low profile. I may just try and jam one under the rear seat, or seat back. Im 6'3" and no one will ever ride back there.

Or, under the pax seat. Dunno but I need something.

I don't want to harm the car's resale value in any way at this point, so no surgery. Any thought on whether or not it would fire through the fuel tank (adequately) if I mounted it vertically on the forward trunk wall???

Luxury cars with walled off trunks are famously known as "bass traps". This has been the case in every one I've installed a sub in without making sure there some way for the sound to vent into the cabin.

I'm not familiar with the rear deck in 123 coupes, but you may be able to fit larger speakers back there and only have to cut the upholstered panel that can be replaced without affecting resale.

There's no cutting back there. Two walls of metal.

my sd has boxes for first aid kit.I drilled holes in them to let sound out from trunk

I installed this sub under the seat of my 85 300cd and it fit fine, i can adjust the seat as well if I want. It is not earth shattering bass, but it helps a lot.

I had a 12" in the trunk of my w123 sedan, even with the first aid kit it sounded great.

If you wanted to squeeze things in you could build a sub box to replace the sear seat bottoms and glue on a foam top.

no pics at the moment but i mounted a slimline 12" sub downwards-facing in the first aid kit space. the cone is between the rear deck and the fuel tank, and only the magnet is proud of the deck.

This fits under the front seat of a w123? I did not realize that any 10 inch powered subwoofer units would.
