Replacement Speakers for W124 / '95 E300

Anyone have any info (speaker sizes / specs) for replacement speakers for my '95 E300? Looks like the front (dash) speakers for 4.75 inches diameter. My car has six speakers (two more in the front doors, and two on the rear shelf). Any ideas on those sizes?

I helped a buddy replace the rear speakers on his 124 sedan, what nightmare that was. Ideally I'd like to find replacements that don't require any cutting / fabricating to install them.

From the FSM section 82-7500:

Front speakers 120mm
Door speakers 160mm
Rear speakers 140mm

(Wagon rear door speakers 100mm)

I bought a pair of 4 inch speakers for the front, and 5.25 inch speakers for the rear.

Removing the rear speaker covers without breaking them is a real pain, but I was able to get that done and only broke off one post on each.

For both front and rear, the new speakers are smaller than the original. This allowed me to use the original speaker holder / mount (with clips that lock into place) as an adapter to mount the new speakers. I cut out as much of the old speaker as I could, drilled holes in the "adapter" and screwed down the new speakers, cut off the excess of the screws and they popped right in. I took some pix, if anyone would like them let me know.

I also cut off the speaker harness stub from each original speaker, spliced on the blade plugs for the new speakers, and then didn't have to molest the harness in the car.

w124 door speakers

The front speakers are described in the FSM, according to another poster, as 160mm. I had such fun with the process that I'd recommend anyone contemplating replacements find an old enclosure or pair on ebay or salvage yard, so that you can study fitment issues at leisure. I eventually found very strong 6-inch subwoofers that fit perfectly with very minor Dremel work on a couple protrusions in the enclosure, but they were not cheap. Depth is also an issue--many otherwise suitable woofers are too deep. Also note that the existing setup has a crossover that splits each channel's signal, so the upper registers aren't even sent to the door speakers. Good luck.

spwiggins - thanks for your addition. What brand / model subwoofers did you get?
