Sub is making big rattle in 123 trunk

I built a sealed box sub woofer for my daughter for HS graduation present. It sounds great and I have the crossover and gain adjusted for great sound.

Has anyone experienced something in the 123 trunk area that rattles badly? It is difficult to locate because it only rattles when the trunk is closed. I have not done an exhaustive search yet, but if noone has "been there, done that," I will be digging into it further on my own.

Have a great day,

Crawl inside with a flashlight and close the lid...turn in up

Seriously tho...with subs, rattles can occur almost anywhere. The most obvious first response is to make sure everything is tightened down and nothing 'moves' in the trunk. If it's still occurring, you have to start getting creative with your detective work.

The first two things I would check are:

1. License plate.

2. Trunk springs.

Hey larry, can you put a picture up of your install? Have you cut the rear deck to allow some of this bass into the cabin?

thanks!

I'm needing to be able to do a good job on my new (19 years old!) W123,... cheers!

hey joey

Some folks have done this including myself. Remove the first aid kit from the deck and use the opening as a port. I fashioned a black grill to fit over the opening. It looks pretty stock.

Hope this helps.

Larry:

Did you ever find the rattle? Maybe wrapping the trunk springs with a section of pipe insulating foam tubing would help - it eliminated a rattle from my springs. Let us know what works!

Also check the panel between the trunk and the gas tank. That was rattling on my car when I first installed a sub. I had to shim it with some washers and thick two-sided tape to stop it. I still get occasional vibrations from the skin of the trunklid vibrating against the "frame" of the lid, but it can only be heard from outside the car.

Hey JPL - thanks for the tips, I have already removed the 1st aid kit and will do same, it seems a great way to go..

What's it sound like? Do you have to go for more ooomph to force it through the port?

cheers

I removed the first-aid kit tray, but left the lid in place on my SD...it made a very noticeable difference. I didn't build any kind of port or grille or anything, but I have considered it. I do have my sub levels set higher than you would normally, to get past all the obstacles (gas tank, back seat, rear tray, etc.)
