Cool Alternative speaker locations for W115

I've got the basic 75 240D (W115) with the single speaker in the center of the dash. I am wondering if the 300D version W115 came with a two speaker system and if so, where were the speakers located, left-right sides of the dash, doors or behind rear seat? No slots seem available looking up from the rear of the trunk. I have an aftermarket FM stereo going into my single speaker on the dash and I'm looking to take advantage of the two channels.

Try posting this in the Audio section. Scott will definitely know what you need!

I would add a pair of 6.5" speakers in the rear deck. It can't be that hard to cut a pair of holes in there. At least 5.25" though.

Since you don't have openings in the left and right side of the dash (are there?), why not install speakers in the door and cover them with cloth of the same color as the interior. If you could do this you could do a pair of tweeters high up in the door and a pair of 6.5" in the bottom part of the door.

Don't do this if you want to maintain originality!

Good luck,

There are two factory "knockouts" in the rear package shelf. You might even be able to get the factory speakers!

Pull the rear shelf trim and peel off the rubberised sould deadening material in the two spots one would expect speakers to sit, and there they are. Not huge (6x9 sized, hole just large enough for the magent, speakers sit in a 1" high or so box). I think there is also a knockout in the shelf panel in each side, should help locate the others.

If you feel you need to cut into the rear shelf instead, be aware that the ventilation ducts are under there and you don't want to cut out the bottom of them -- sucks cold or hot air out of the trunk into the car. The air goes our of the passenger compartment through the slots at the base of the rear window and out the car at the slots behind the rear doors. You will have to duplicate the factory setup with a box, there is no way to flush mount the speakers without cutting away the bottom fo the ventilation duct.

Most aftermarket guys just rip through both sides and make a huge mess. We had to cut sheetmetal and weld up the bottom panels on my brother's '75, what a mess.

As far as the front kick panels go, these are glued in, very difficult to remove, and you risk snagging the vacuum lines for the door locks if you cut blind. Door mount is a problem, too -- you will have to sacrifice the map pockets and use a surface mount speaker -- no room inside.

psfred,

Thanks for the info! I'll investigate the rear shelf area. I'm a little suspicious though because looking up from inside the trunk the rear shelf doesn't look accessable.

Holson Adi,
I like your idea of lots of speakers located in the doors as well. I want to however keep it somewhat original so that's why I was wondering how the w115's from the factory were set up for stereo.

The holes aren't accessable from the trunk -- run the wires under the cover at the side of the rear seatback and down into the provided notch at the side of the knockout.

The holes are inside the ventilation duct, not visible from underneath. You will not be able to flush mount speakers unless you cut nasty holes in the ducts, ruining the authenticity of the car and some of the collision protection.

I realize this is a very old thread... BUT, additionally there is a factory knockout for another mono speaker in the back, under the back window, between the other factory knockouts that psfred mentions. So...one could, in theory, replace the mono speaker in the front, and add one to the back and have a strange sort of bassackwards stereo system.
