strange device on driver's side dash speaker cable
I replaced my factory speakers yesterday. I put in 4" x 6" plate speakers. They didn't fit perfectly, meaning, I wasn't able to screw down all four corners, but they did fit and aren't moving or anything. Anyway, on the driver's side speaker, there was some type of small plastic device wrapped in foam in between the wire from the radio and the wire going to the speaker. Nothing was on the passenger side. Anyone have any clue what this is?

They use these really strange electrical connectors for the speakers, they are like the ones that plug in to the back of the radio, the 2 for the speaker outputs on the older ones without an amp. They wrap the ones near the speakers in foam, i suspect this is what you found. The one side probably has a longer lead than the other, which is why you couldn't find it. Did you just snip the wire off or what?

here's what I did
I just left the strange connector in the wire there. There was also one in the back right speaker as well. I put 100w pioneers in the front and it sounds great, though getting the 4x6 plate in the dash was a bit of a problem.
Mine had the amp mounted behind the dash, by the way. Does anyone know of an easy to replace the year speakers? I'm not sure how the other model's and years are, but my 86 420 has the rear six inch rounds permantely mounted to a pod of some sort that lifts the speark up from the whole and points it slightly away from the rear window. My right rear is blown and I wanted to replace it with better after markets, but nothing fits. The older speakers had smaller magnets, unlike the new speakers, so it's tough to get something in the speaker whole. The speaker is not easy to get off the pod; I would have to cut it. To buy a new pod/speaker combo from MB (here in Fort Lauderdale) cost $45. I can't imagine that they are fantastic speakers. Any ideas? |
