Trying to install Uro antenna on my '82 240D W123

1 Attachment(s)
Hirschmann needs major fixing, so got a cheap aftermarket to hold me for a while. Not figuring this wiring at all. Youtube and other diagrams all show different color wiring for our '82 240.
Saving the old car plug.
I only know the black is power and long brown is neg on the car wires. URO did not come with instructions.
On antenna, black is ground, green is power. Red is mystery. Showing power with ohm meter, but nothing happening in a few configurations
Also, my electric antenna switch in the car does nothing, never has since purchase. That could be the problem as well.
Any thoughts? Electrical is not my strong point, though got a VDO Continental upand running for Bluetooth nicely. I did hook the Continental antenna wire to the original car wire, but not sure if the switch disables or overrides it.

Hi Mrsnak, which part number do you have? We'd be happy to post a photo of the instructions if you no longer have the printed bag.
  • AUTA2050 - Universal Power Antenna w/Chrome Mast
  • AUTA2050B - Universal Power Antenna w/Black Mast
  • AUTA2030 - Chrome Mast Universal Electric Antenna Replaces Hirschmann Antenna, Base diameter 28mm, mast extended length is 35"
  • AUTA2030B - Black Mast Universal Electric Antenna Replaces Hirschmann Antenna, Base diameter 28mm, mast extended length is 35"

It's the 2050B, thanks!

Hi Mrsnak, here's the antenna motor wiring key:
  • Red = Power
  • Black = Ground
  • Green = Motor Relay Control (switched power)
While green is charged, the antenna mast will move to the extended position. When green is not charged, the antenna will move to the retracted position.

Still having trouble

The URO instructions don't address connecting to the 5 wire Mercedes to hook up properly to the 3 wire URO. The web has little on this

On the Merc, the Black wire, I think, is ground, and then we have two power wires, the Blue and lighter Brown (longer). No clue about the other two.
Any ideas? I included the original plug for pin location to the original Hirshmann.

I do get a clicking from the URO antenna with the Blue (to Red) and Black (to Black) hooked up, but no action - even with trying the other wires to the URO Green.
Radio is on.

Also, I have an antenna power wire going to the Continental deck I put in.
Do I need to bypass the up/down antenna switch on the Merc or leave as is in neutral?

Well, looks like this URO unit probably isn't compatible with my 240D without significant wire sorting and switch bypassing. Wish URO support had been better. Will return this to Pelican Parts and install a simple manual antenna until I repair the Hirschmann. I did my due diligence. I fully understand that the local URO team may not be familiar with these cars.

Hi Mrsnak, the red antenna wire should be connected to continuous vehicle power, and the black antenna ground wire can go to any ground. If you use a multi-meter to check the unknown wires coming off the back of the radio, do any of the wires have power when when the radio is turned on, but don't have power when the car is on but the radio is off? This would be the mast control wire, which should be connected to the green antenna wire. If a mast position control wire from the radio doesn't exist, you could connect the green antenna wire to a switched power wire going to the radio (that's positive when vehicle is turned on). Then the antenna will be extended whenever the car is running, regardless of whether the radio is turned on or not.

If someone wanted to add manual mast control, an inconspicuous switch could be added to the green wire, for going through a car wash for example. Simply flip the switch off to de-energize the green antenna wire, and the mast will retract regardless of radio status.

Well, I did end up returning it with the eventual goal of repairing my original Hirschmann. I did install a simple manual mast antenna, but now have a new problem, the same as I would have had with the URO - the need for an antenna adapter.
What it requires is a FEMALE HIRSCHMANN TO FEMALE ANTENNA ADAPTOR. I cannot find these for sale in the US, only in the UK, so scratching my head for a solution:
Are these Hirshmann plugs compatible with another makes, like Motorola?

Anyone know if the Hirschmann connector is proprietary, or is it actually a European DIN connector? Found one on eBay in France, but the seller doesn't ship to the US.

Looks like SirFerret on BW used original parts to make his own adapter: https://www.benzworld.org/threads/radio-antenna-adapter-for-generic-antenna.2934074/

mrsnak 01-18-2024 08:24 PM

I saw that, but you'd still need the female Hirschmann to make something. I don't want to cut the plug in my car to make it work. Posted this in a few places and no one seems to know if the Hirschmann is proprietary. I tried to reach out to the UK shops that carry the adapter to see if they ship to the US, but no response.

Might be proprietary?

So I found a seller in the UK who has these and kindly added them to their Ebay shop for us US buyers. Works great!

^ Thanks for the update, we'll mention "Connects2 CT27AA82 Hirschman - Female DIN Antenna Adapter" on the instruction sheet for folks keeping their original radio.
