500SL stereo (I need HELP)
Hi,
I am looking into purchasing a 1991-1994 500SL and I was wondering what options I have for sound. Is the stock stereo decent in it, and how many speakers does it have? What size are they? Basically I want to have good clean bass along with highs. I'm looking into getting Boston Acoustics Rally Series 6.5 inch component speakers which have a crossover. I have an amp from a previous install which i wanted to mount behind the two seats. Also, do i need to upgrade the receiver that the car has if I want to add these items? Thanks for all the help! :D I'm excited about starting this project.... |
Some info
I’m not sure about the other years, but a 1991 500SL comes with two highs (twitters 1 ½“) up on the dash board, two mid’s (3 ½)on the door panels, and of course two bass (5 ½)on the door panels as well, six total. I’m not positive about the sizes, but the tow on the doors are mounted in a sealed box. The whole system uses 3 olmn speakers. Aftermarket speakers are 4 olmn, you can still use them but it wont sound as good.
I bought my car form an audio sound fanatic. He built a custom stealth box behind the seats that houses 3 JLW12 the whole system uses MB Quart for mid’s and highs with MB Quart crossovers. The control unit is a Alpine CVA 1000, and power is delivered by a McIntosh 4000 amp. Personally I’m looking to put the factory system in it, I like to keep it as original as possible!!! |

The systems in the 129 from 1990 to 1993 are really poor. The door speakers are 6.5" woofers run by a small amp under the passengers floor board, there are 4 inch mids in the top opening and hard dome tweeters in the dashboard. The mids and highs run off the power of the radio. I would suggest a new deck am fm cd at least one amplifier with 3 ways in the front and some type of sub or at least 6x9's in the rear pockets for some base as the doors don't do it. Good luck on your car and if I can help any more let me know! Here is a pic with two way Diamonds and another with rear speakers!
