I have recently bought a 1994 C220 Elegance with no radio, unfortunately at some point the ISO/DIN radio connector plug has been cut from the radio loom and replaced with bullet and spade connectors so now I have the problem figuring out which wire is what. What would be better is if anyone can identify the wires from the colour code so that I know these are the correct sized wires and fused feeds. Some I have identified already can anyone fill in the blanks?

Black/Yellow and Black = rear left speaker

Black/White and Black = rear right speaker

Green/Brown and Brown = front left or right speaker

Brown/Black and Green/Brown/Red = front left or right speaker

Violet/Red = ?? This is connected to a Red wire heading to the electric aerial as well as a connector

Brown = ??

Pink/Yellow/Green = ??

Blue/Grey = ?? This was taped up unused

Green/White = ?? This was taped up unused

Red = Goes to the electric aerial (see above)

White = Goes to the electric aerial



Any help much appreciated

I happen to have the whole wiring diagram right here at home believe it or not.
OK, first of course is the antenna cable, MB calls that connector 2
Then there is connector "A", I'll give these by socket numbers, if you can get the correct connectors it should be easier to figure out.
Connector A
socket 1 green with white stripe, VSS input (vehicle speed, for speed dependent volume control)
socket 2 (and socket 5) both blue with a white stripe for power antenna, feed into the same socket on the antenna, so it doesn't look like it makes a difference which socket you put them in.

Socket 4 and also socket 7, there was a midyear change made, these are the 2 power supply wires, here are the variations:
*** up to 11/94 socket 4 is red with a violet stripe, this is the constant power supply from fuse 21. socket 7 is pink with a yellow stripe and green splotches, this is the ignition switches voltage from fuse 20
*** as of 12/94 socket 4 is red with a blue stripe, again this is the constant power, but is supplied by fuse 26. Socket 7 is pink with a green stripe and is supplied by fuse 21 (NOT 20 as in the earlier version). ***Be careful to note the month and year of production, it can be found on a lable on the drivers door jamb near the striker.

Now to skip back to socket 6 (we already covered 5 up by socket 2)
Socket 6 gray with a blue stripe, this is the input from the instrument cluster rheostat for illumination with the exterior lights on.
Socket 8 is brown, that's the ground wire.

Connector B is all the speaker outputs, I want to simplify this somewhat and just give the socket numbers and wire colors and a brief description:

1 and 2 right rear and right rear door,
1 is white, 2 is brown with white strip

3 and 4 right front and right front door
3 is brown with a green stripe and red splotches, 4 is brown with a black stripe.

5 and 6 is left front and left front door
5 is brown with a green stripe, 6 is brown

7 and 8 is left rear and left rear door,
7 is pink, 8 is brown with a pink stripe.

As I side-note, there are some colors you mentioned i do not see on my schematic, maybe you are quoting colors from the aftermarket radio (such as the red and white wires for the power antenna for example, as I see no solid red wire at all). On some of the wires with stripes, is it possible that you are listing the stripe color first? I just took all my info from the schematic and didn't really pay that much attention to your post itself.

Thanks for your quick and detailed response.

As to the Red and White wires, yes they are from the (I believe aftermarket) electric aerial. The aerial has a Black wire connected to Ground in the boot, the Red Wire is presently connected to the Red with a Violet stripe wire at the Radio position (from your info. this is constant power) so this means the White must be the aerial trigger to be connected to the radio. This means I now know all the connections to install my radio this weekend (and find out if the electric aerial actually works!) The only difference in colour codes being for the rear speakers, perhaps because my car does not have any speakers in the rear doors just in the parcel shelf.

I did look for the build date on the label in the door shut but none of the numbers on it looked to be a date, but it must be the earlier model because of the colour of the constant power wire.
