How can you disable all mute functions on Becker 1492 head?

I have an Alpine 630 M-bus CD changer installed in my '95 E300D with the original Becker 1492 head.
During disc change, the Becker radio shows "loading" and mutes the audio signal. When the next CD plays, the Becker mute function releases and almost always clips about 1/2 second from the beginning of the first cut. Signal tests have determined that it is the head, not the CD player that is actually doing the muting. (To test, I broke the audio line from the CD changer and inserted a tone generator into the radio's CD input. The tone muted during CD loads.)

I want to disable all muting functions on the Becker radio. If that means clipping a trace on a circuit board, that's OK. BTY, I plan to never install a phone.

Muting Issue

Hi Peeb,

I will check the service manual to see if the value of a capacitor can be change to reduce the muting time to a shorter period so that you won't get the songs clipped. Disabling the muting is not recommended since muting also is done on the radio when you search out stations on it. Also for when the tape section auto reverses. I will get back with you tomorrow. Thanks very much Cleeve. The capacitor value is a good idea. I mostly listen to XM and CD's. I would really like to try disabling the mute since I don't use the cassette player and very rarely listen to AM-FM stations.

Hi,

Is there a solution to this problem? Is this mute issue the same as the fading in and out of the beginning and end of tracks on CDs?

When moving between tracks on a CD, the beginning of songs are faded in after missing 2-3 seconds. I would like to cancel this feature if at all possible. Is there a setting change available somewhere or am i stuck with this rather annoying fade in-fade out feature? I am also referring to the 1492 model with a CD changer.

Any input would be appreciated.

I'm still interested in disabling the mute. Here is what I learned from Cleve at La Jolla Audio.

It's my undertanding that the mute function in the 1492 is part of a program in a chip in the radio head. I'm not sure if there is a way to disable or modify it without changing the chip. I don't know if that's possible. I agree it's annoying.

I just got a 1994 E420 with a 1492 unit and I am shopping for a CD changer. I kind of like the fade out and back in when changing radio stations, but if it messes with CD tracks then I might want it changed as well. It will be interesting to see if a modification can be applied.

The mute happens as the CD changer loads a disc. Sometimes the mute overlaps the first half second or so of the first cut on a CD. The mute does not occur between tracks on a given CD, only between CD's during loading.

OK, thanks for clearing that up. I am not so hesitant to buy a CD changer now.
