Why did my power antenna blow up?

So today I go to the store, and I shut my car off, and I notice the power antenna doesnt go down. Then the car fills up with that nasty smelling burning plastic smell. Im like oh great, this cant be good.

I tore it apart when I got home and the circuit board fried itself out. The antenna moved perfectly free and didnt labor at all. Why would this do that? Can I get just a new circuit board? Does anyone have a spare? I dont want to replace the whole thing.

it is model @ 6000 EL MCA 4591

Here is a few pics...

Thanks for any help. Seems right when you fix one thing, another is right there for ya....

The power antenna on my wife's Peugeot did the exact same thing! Except the power resistor got so hot it just unsoldiered itself. I just left the antenna up though.

I had a similar issue with my antenna, but mine simply shorted. I let the metal mechanism touch the circuit board when I had it opened up, trying to fix it not going up the last notch and making a nasty grinding noise. After that, mine wouldn't go up at all .. grrr..

But it worked out nicely. What I did was run 2 wires directly to the motor (is your motor still ok?) and along to the front of the car (under rear seat & through center console, not at all hard).

I then got a spare 190E sunroof switch (its very simple, just runs either earth/12v or 12v/earth to the 2 pins), installed it in the blanked out gap in the dashboard next to the actual sunroof switch, and taking power from it, but you could take power from anywhere you like. I connected the wires from the motor to the 2 pins on the 2nd roof switch.

Now I simply push & hold one way for aerial up, and the other way for aerial down. It means it doesn't go up and down *every* time you turn the car/radio on & off (I hated it doing that), and I can put it up as far as I like so it doesn't snag on trees etc., and don't put it up when I'm only listening to CDs etc.

hope you understood all that, and maybe you'll be bothered to come up with your own ingenious fix, too!

later

Russ
