I think they are supposed to have a lighted AM/FM scale. I think it will only come on when the headlights are turned on. I think the bulb is somewhat easy to replace, because I know that I had replaced a bulb in my radio once, but it could have been a different bulb.

I replaced the becker that came in my '85 300CD with a modern unit. As far as I know, it worked fine when removed- just had no CD and I did not like the FM tuning system.

Anyone want it? I'll give it away if you pay for shipping.

How much would it be for shipping to Paradise TX?

The radio in the 240D is beyond hope. The knobs are jammed, and the radio doesn't even turn on.

NIC,

Does the tape player on your old radio work? If so, I may be interested. My tape player's shot, and I have a short somewhere...I want a CD player, but also wanna keep it stock...

I took the radio off and searched for a bulb but did not find any which could be replaced without taking it apart. My guess that if the AM/FM scale supposed to be backlighted it should be from bulb attached somewere to the inside of the console.. I assume the radio in 115 is different from one 123 came with. Mine does not have any tape player..

Sergey,
What model of radio do you have? Did you see a little green thing back there. That is where the light should be coming from, and the bulb should be located in the unit. If you are not affraid of opening up electroic items, crack the unit open and see if you can locate the bulb inside, then pay a visit to your local Mercedes dealer and see if they can help you out with a new bulb. I hope that this will help.

Is the 115 radio a two-knob style?

The 123 radio has numerous buttons (numbers 1 to 0 on top, with various things underneath), with a volume control that looks almost like a toggle switch. On the top row, #'s 1 through 6 are FM presets, while #'s 7 to 0 are AM presets, and you choose a preset to change stations. You can use the auto tune or actually use the top row to type in a station (pretty cool, actually).

Just be nice if my radio had a CD player, although I'm willing to settle for a working tape player with a portable CD player for a low price and an OEM look.

Yes, the W115 radio is a two knob style radio, and I believe this style of radio was used in the the W123 until 1982, but someone catch me on this if I am wrong.

No problemo. Ya win some and ya lose some. With the 190D coming home soon, I'll have plenty of time to find a new radio for the 240D. The 190D is going to require far less work to make it right, so it'll be moved to the first in line. The 190D one is going to be what I bring to the shindig this fall.

NIC, that's cool...thanks anyways!

I'll probably just wind up getting an aftermarket unit with a CD player...or maybe get a tape player and a CD changer; haven't decided yet...

Warden,

Some people do prefer to keep their car completely "stock", including the sound system. I chose to upgrade because the original sound system in my car was really not very good. The speakers left a lot to be desired and, of course, there was no CD player.

You can buy an inexpensive (around $125) radio/CD player with plenty of power that will fit right in. All of the major electronics stores can install this with no problem and usually at no additional cost. The speakers are a little more difficult as the openings are not exactly right but replacing them doesn't require major surgery. I also added a small powered sub-woofer under the passenger seat for better low end sound but thats an extra that isn't required.

So....I think your decision to upgrade is a logical one.

Good luck,

Nic
