Looks like a simple mast change won't do it and I now need to remove the antenna to inspect the innards. It's not clear to me how to do this, and my maintenance CD-ROM seems to be on significant back order. Is the grommet on the outside just a push fit over the unit? What else? TIA.

You are on the right track. Just remove the back cover and be sure not to loose the black rubber mounts! Have fun.
