Dave: post some photos, and if you had to do it over again, would get the Jehnert's ?

I need to re-do the 500E's sound system, and need know if I want to spend the time fabricating the samething I did for the wagon, or just get the Jehnerts.

BTW: how much was it, and how long did it take to get ?

:-) neil

Neil,

I'm not entirely done yet. Shanta's car came with the full system and I really like how it sounds. Both cars need an EQ... I bought a used Audio Control DQT third-octave EQ but haven't installed it yet. A littel RTA tweaking should smooth things out nicely.

On the set I purchased for the diesel, I had fitment problem on the dash... turns out the baffle plate is not quite correct. (On Shanta's car, a PO had chopped the holes larger, so her installer had to toss the Jehnert-supplied baffles and fabricate his own anyway.) The labor to install properly is quite intensive. Cost, for the complete setup with all speakers and crossovers, is about $1000 USD shipped (varies with current exchange rate). Shipping time (via German Post) was about 3 weeks, I think. If anyone orders from them, PLEASE let me know, I want to get an extra couple sheets of their "adhesive fleece" but the cost is prohibitive to buy alone - needs to be "piggybacked" on a larger order. There is now a USA Jehnert dealer, Cascade Audio in Oregon.

In a car that I wanted a GOOD system in, yeah, I'd do it over - especially on an early 124 that has no door speakers. On a 500E (or other late 124 with door speakers), I'm not sure - I've never heard the stock door setup for comparison. I'd be tempted to throw Rainbows in the dash, run it off aftermarket amps, and call it good enough.

Photos of my not-yet-complete installs are here:

The blue '87 has Jehnerts, I don't have photos of the E500 setup yet. My original theory was that the new-style tweeter was too tall, but after comparing Shanta's old-style Jehnert tweet, I discovered that was NOT the problem... the tweet fits in only ONE position and the baffle is preventing that. I haven't edited the photos yet, nor have I finished the install... for now I'm using Quart coaxials which I dislike, the highs are too bright/harsh when bounced off the glass. (Quarts work better fired sideways, IMO!)
