My '95 has them in the rear doors, never seen them in the front doors in a UK or European model.

i believe the coupes were the only ones to have door speakers, yet they weren't really full range speakers, but door subs...
hope this helps.

nope, my 92 300E has the door subs as well. It comes with the aktiv bass package on the becker system. I think it became standard fare some time around 1992. As far as I know, mercedes also offered some type of "upgraded" system that had a few more speakers, because my car manual refers to the aktiv bass system being only on 300E 2.6s and the regular 300s having a multi speakers system. As far as I can tell, the manul lied however...

92 w124 sound systems
Here is some information that I have gleened from various sources. In 1992, the w124 came with two sound system possibilities...the Active Bass system (don't know what aktiv is) which had a single amp that amplified subwoffers mounted in the doors, or the full Sound System that offered two seperate amps that fed all ten speakers. The full Sound System can be verified two ways...look at the speakers on the rear deck...do they have a large alligator eye that seems to extend upward out of the grill...if so, that indicates that there are two vertically mounted tweeters attached onto the woofer and you have a full Sound System. You can also check at the trunk mounted receiver...if you have two speaker jacks plugged into the left and right speaker output jacks that are located under the 4 pin power input plug...you have an Active Bass System. If you have a little box attached to the left bottom side with a three pin connector plugged into it...you have the full Sound System. By the way, the Sound System Adapter that attaches to the receiver on the full Sound System DOES NOT reduce the signal output of the receiver, however it alters the sound curve and extends the bass response.
The w124 has, in the least, 2 dash speakers (4" / 101mm) and 2 rear deck speakers which are 5.25". On W124 series cars with the full Sound System the rear deck speakers are upgraded to a 5.25" component speaker with 2 external dome tweeters, they add 2 (mini) subwoofers in each door, external power amps, and both dash speakers are ugraded to coaxials. The full Sound System is option number 810. The Active Bass system is option number 814.

hehe, ok, that sort of clears things up. My car has the 4 total tweaters on the reaf deck, plus the door subs, plus the two amps and tuner unit in the trunk. However, my front speakers are just large tweaters. They are capped off as such, and barely play any sound, and are generally overpowered by the rear tweeters... strange business altogehter...

You will need the door panels from a car that has the door speakers. Then there is the hole that needs to be made in the metal of the door to accomodate the speakers. I would suggest that you don't install the door subs. I had to disconnect mine because over time, they cause the door to rattle like crazy, and I got tired of taking the door apart every month in order to tighten random things up. Instead of the door subs, I added 3 10s in the trunk, and made a few little holes in the med kit area, and the bass is about 10x better than with the door subs.

Kolo,
I heard some guy in the Euros bought some door speaker system from the following company. They are OE fit for older W124's. Link to JehNert Click on door panels then Mercedes and use the drop down menu to select W124.... |

I got an e-mail from that company, and the panels go for $500, without speakers. They do offer a variety of color-matched upholstery...
...and I agree. Go with trunk mounted subs...I am sick of my door panels rattling as well. No amount of panel securing has been a permanent solution to vibration...

my cousin thinks the door speakers are actually a waste of money..in that they do not really help with sound due to their crappy obstructed location...the only way to utilize the door would be if you had speakers closer to the front (towards the front of the car) of the door panel...otherwise, the sound gets absorbed or muted by the bodies or seats....

I agree that the door speaker placement is horrible. The bass is loud enough, but it actually overwhelms the cabin, making conversations a bit difficult. I found that the door subs while being loud, didn't hit hard at all, and produced very muddled bass at higher volumes. All in all, it was a bad idea to begin with...

this is what my cousin said, he said he could rig up the door but since the enclosure is so so so tight i'd really experience more of a muffled sound or just straight vibration, and what's the use or the point if i've got two 12's in the back pumping 400W of bass, with a rear porting where the First Aid Kit normally sits, and then have high end mids in back with mid/highs in the front....
door speaker-schmeakers!!! :0)
