560 SEC Head Unit Replacement

Does anyone have any suggestions on aftermarket replacement.

I want to replace the Becker head unit with an aftermarket unit.

Circuit City stated it would be $700.00 because they would need to add a 4 channel amp to power the additional stock speakers that the 89 560 SEC has as stock.

I would appreciate any feedback and or suggestions

I think they are lying to you! You dont need an amp to power those little speakers.

Yeah, I have a suggestion. This is what I am getting for my 420. A Nakamichi CD-45z headunit and Infinity Kappa speakers. The reason I like the Nakamichi deck so much is becuase it is of extremely high quality, yet it looks stock. It's not one of those cheesy things with little lights or dolphins dancing around on it. I dunno, that's fine for a Honda, but not a classy Benz in my opinion. Another advantage, you can order the Nak with amber backlighting, so it will match the rest of your intrument lights. This way you won't have an amber dash and a green, blue or red headunit. So, stock don't-break-into-my-car look, top notch quality and matches the rest of your dash. Look at it at www.nakamichiusa.com, or to buy it, www.speakersound.com

kappa sizes?

mbtjc,

I have an '87 SDL, stock 4 speaker system. It is a commuter / travel car with over 200K so I don't want to sink $2K into a stereo. I have replaced my head unit with an Infinity unit, now it is time for speakers. I like the sound of the Kappa's and am looking for sizes. I have positives and negatives about fitting the 4x6 plate speakers in the front (462.5 perhaps). Also looking for the size to fit the back, most say 5" or 5 1/4" is about it. I have also heard some folks going to 6" speakers. Let me know what you have heard, I'm about ready to move ahead as well.

Any other folks have suggestions? I know at least a small sub would be recommended as well with these size speakers.

Thanks,
Chuck

well I know on mine nothing more than a 4" will fit the front. are you sure you can fit a 4x6 plate? The speaker cut out is 4" at it's widest point (towards the center of the dash) and then tapers off so I don't know how you're gonna fit a 4x6. I could be missing something though... With the rear speakers, I measured mine and from edge to edge they measured 6.25 (?) I don't know if this is some odd size or am I not measuring correctly? I'm gonna try to fit 6.5s. I'll borrow an old 6.5 from a friend and see if it fits before I buy the dang things. Another possibility for the front would be to have 6.5" kick panels made. The sound would be much much better BUT your e-brake would be in the way, and it would be more expensive. Just an idea.

I have 4X6 Eclipse Plates in the front and 6 inch Alpines in the rear the front plates had to be cut on the edges but they fit and the rear speakers just dropped in, i will take some pics if you want

pictures would help

300sdl,

Thanks for the offer. I would love to see the install. Do you have the model # of the 4x6's? I have heard there may be differing types of 4x6 plates ( std and european?). Maybe not.

You said you had 6" in the back. Did they fit well? Much cutting?

Thanks again, I think speakers are on my Christmas list.

Chuck
