Radio wiring colors and ...
1991 MB 300E
In the back of the OEM radio.. there is the slot for the power Plug, which has four heads... and on the wiring its numbered but I have no idea which wire goes into what slot, I had unplugged it and now don't remember what color goes where... Reinstalling the same radio again!! |
On my 1981 300TDT, the RED is accessory power (ignition), BLUE is power antenna, I had no "constant" wire so I had to add one going directly to the battery (with an inline fuse) Brown is ground. The rest (black/red and black/green) are to speakers.

Do you have a volt meter or a circuit tester? You should have a constant power and a switched power. Constant power will give a reading without the key in the ignition. The switched power will only come on when you turn the ignition key past the locked position. As stated - the power wires should be red (perhaps yellow). Ground should be brown. Blue is power antenna. Two-tone wires are for your speakers. You can test speaker wires without a volt meter by hooking up both ends to both ends of a 9-volt battery. When you do so, the speaker connected to the wires will make a *scratching* sound.

On the plastic connector the wires go in to are the numbers 1 through 4 for the 4 different wires. There are 2 options on color depending on if you have the Active Bass system. here are the 2 possiblities:
without Active bass, 1 is brown, 2 is Black with a gray stripe, 3 is Gray with a pink stripe, and 4 is red with a white stripe OR WITH Active Bass, 1 is brown, 2 is black, 3 is gray with a blue stripe, 4 is red. Gilly |

Hopefully between the descriptions and the image, he will get it sorted out. I noticed one of the wires was black with a yellow stripe, which I don't show as one of the combinations in the wiring diagram, probably a different year car. Since the stock radio is being reinstalled, it's important to note that this should be a 2 piece radio, so only the head unit is being discussed here, not the tuner/amp in the trunk.
