300SEL speakers and becker stereo questions

I have a 1989 stock 300SEL when it comes to audio. The speakers are starting to sound horrible. From the earliest times i can remember the car, whenever there is heavy bass, the speakers will cut the trebble out to let the heavy bass play, then when there is alot of trebble it will cut the bass out. So basically, you can never have even bass and even trebble no matter what the levels are on the becker stereo. Is this a speaker problem or a head unit/becker problem? Anyone know? Thanks!

I would have to say #1 problem is usually the stock amplifiers as they have capacitors that fail and cause all kinds of audio problems. The other problem is that there are no high frequency drivers in the front of the car although there are 4 tweeters in the rear so there are all kinds of limitations in the oem speakers.

i never thought about the amp...that's probably a major downfall to the everything. Anyone here modified their speakers/amp in a W126 here? I'm not familiar with the W126 audio system at all. I mainly work on my 500E audio, so the W126 audio is in the dark to me :) Anyone here replace anything? Thanks!

It is easiest to replace the radio with a high power radio and remove the stock amps and wire past them. The next step is to upgrade speakers....
