How do I replace my antenna grommet?
The antenna grommet on my 84 300D has a crack in it and is allowing water to leak into the trunk. I picked up a new grommet, but am wondering how to replace it. Do I need to take the whole antenna assembly out or is there an easier way to replace it. Any help is appreciated.

I just put on some GE Silicon II on the antenna grommet area. It worked very well.

Where did you find the grommet?
My mechanic told me the antenna manufacturer would not sell the grommet separately from the entire antenna assembly. My 85 300D's was damaged by the PO who apparently attempted to force the antenna to retract when it was stripped. Replacing the antenna was easy enough, but I ended up using black silicone form-a-gasket material to kludge a grommet. (If you coat your finger with liquid soap you can shape the silicone without it sticking to your finger.) As I recall, the grommet was much larger on the underside, which would imply insertion from within. |

Grommets are available from the dealer or a lot of other places. They are cheap. Remove panel in trunk. Remove power lead from antenna. Remove two screws that hold antenna and lower it out of the hole. Remove old grommet. New grommet will be easier to work with if you warm it up in pan of hot water. Fit it into hole in fender and be sure to get the rubber lip seated all the way around. Be sure you have nice round opening when looking down through installed grommet. I like to put just a dab of silicon grease on the "ball" part of the antenna before I put it backl in place. Seems to make it fit easier and maybe fill any tiny spaces that could hold water. I figure to gave to replace teh grommet on any Benz I buy. 15 minutes work.

Greg,
I found the grommet at a local MB dealer. The local MB parts store I normally use didn't have any in stock. The cost was under $3. Tim |
