My 500e's speakers
I have a '92 500E with some non-functioning and buzzy speakers. I am prepared to replace all of the speakers in the car, but don't really have the appetite to buy a new head unit, have a new subwoofer installed, etc. I'd like to make do with the stock headunit and CD changer and just upgrade all of the speakers.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can and cannot do? Which manufacturers have speakers that will fit in the dash, doors, etc.? Thanks in advance. Frank Las Vegas, NV |

Sound Problems
Hi Frank,
If the speakers are buzzing you may just be in need of the head unit being repaired/exchanged. Sometimes when the head units act up they can fake you out thinking that the speakers are bad but are not really. However, if the head unit is left buzzing and not repaired for sometime then damage will occur to the speaker. The buzz is most likely DC voltage leaking inside the head unit to the speakers. I could use more info. to further assist you. Contact me at my Web site: www.lajollaaudiorepair.com Cleeve Morrison La Jolla Audio Repair |

Front driver-side dash speaker is non-operative (no sound). Passenger-side door subwoofer buzzes badly at certain frequencies. I think one of the two rear deck speakers must be non-operative, as I just am not getting a lot of sound out of there. I haven't bothered to check this.
I figure with my 10 year old car, I probably have some loose wiring and speaker failures. I'm assuming that the stock factory speakers weren't that good to start with, so I'm willing to replace every speaker in the car. The head unit doesn't appear to have any problems that I can ascertain. What I'm scared of is a new head unit, new CD changer, new wiring, and new speakers. I don't feel that I need world-class audiophile audio. I am inclined to make the most of the electronics that I already have and to just upgrade the speakers. |
