No Left Side -- 92 190E
Both driver's side speakers in my 92 190e quit. The front one died a slow death and, for a while, could be brought back to life by quickly turning the volume up. Once it was completely dead, the rear one quickly followed.
This is the original factory set-up. Here's what I've done so far: - Swapped the left and right radio outputs. Still nothing. Ruled out the radio. - Replaced the amp with an identical factory model. Still nothing. Ruled out the amp. - Pulled the in-console fader and by-passed it by touching the wires directly together. Still nothing. Ruled out the fader. What are the odds that both speakers are dead? Is there a common ground wire or something? Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this thing? I have the one from the CD-ROM, but the amp isn't even shown, making it impossible to figure out what's going on. I just want my left side back. Any help is much appreciated. --John |

The amp is only for the door subs, are they working? Here is a diagram of your system. The 190e stock radio can send out DC when the filter caps inside go bad @50 of them and this can cause the speakers to self destruct as we see this all the time in our repair department.

Thanks for the reply and diagram, SCLJA.
Both door speakers are working. I see how that can happen per the diagram. But, I have no output from any speaker when the amp is disconnected -- that's what mis-lead me down that path. Does that have something to do with the common ground? Anyway, are you suggesting that both speakers could be bad? I guess I can figure a way to cross the wires (maybe on the rear ones) to test that theory. I've gone through several threads in this forum on speaker size and replacement methods...looks like I'm in for some fun.

You will need to replace the speakers front is easy it is a 4 in and rear can take a 6" wil low profile tweeters to clear the stock grills. I am still concerned about your radio and if it isnt fixed before you replace speakers you might be doing it twice.....This is one speaker that fits easily.........

Sound Problems
Hi JohnnyAl,
As Scott mentioned, your original problem was not the speakers dying but the stereo going bad which took out the speakers. If you replace the speakers and NOT get the stereo serviced you will be buying more speakers sooner than you think. Your stereo can be serviced by our repair department and put it back in to factory spec's. Our repair dept has an Exchange Program for most Mercedes radios. Give me a call for more info. www.lajollaaudiorepair.com Cleeve Morrison La Jolla Audio Repair |

fader control
I just had new mb quart put into my car. How do i know that the fader was bypassed? When i pushed the fader control forward, I can hear the front sound get alittle louder but as for the rear, it stays the same. And when I push it all the way back, there is no change in the cabin.
Thanks! |

If you just had new speakers put in your car I don't know why they would rewire your fader control. This normally gets done when replacing the radio aand when it is done the fader has no control over your speakers.

Thanks Scott
I have been reading alot of your responses on this forum and am glad of your contribution.
In regards to my setup, what would be the best option for me to get more bass. I have read about dropping 6x9 and frankly, I do not want to cut metal. A 10 in. bandpass enclosure is another that I have read to be put in the trunk. What about upgrading what MB has already in the active bass system by installing 6.5 midbass in the door pods and dropping in 6.5 components or coaxials in the rear. I do not listen to rap or hip hop, just good old classic rock, some pop, classical etc...I want to be able to feel enough bass when I play Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb..... James. |

Hi James, the doors don't do a very good job in the low end. If you upgrade and give them more power you just get more rattles and vibrations. I would suggest a 10 in free air sub firing through the first aid kit area with a clean looking grill.

Thanks
Another option is for me to get a bazooka 8" and attach it to the board where I have my amp on now and take out the first aid kit and cover it up with speaker fabric.
This way, when I can still keep the stock look when I decide to take out the bazooka. Still pondering... |
