The Sony in the W123 is dead, now what?

I have an old Sony CD receiver in my W123. The CD player does not work. I do not have any experience replacing an audio system, but I have to belive I would be more careful than the folks at Best Buy.

Is it possible to hook up the unit and bypass the fader control on the console? I's in use right now, but I understand it limits the output of the system.

Looks like I have the factory speakers and would just as soon leave them for now. Do the mercedes speakers each have a ground wire or are they just grounded to the frame? I wonder if I should pull new wires...

Do I need to pull the console out or maybe just the wood to make this all happen?

Am I crazy for trying it?

Do the folks at Cruthfield know anything special that I should take advantage of?

Thanks much!

Installing a new deck should be fairly easy - the old one probably had a wiring harness that you'll be able to plug the new one into.

The factory speaker wires are fine - (remove the cover from one of the rear ones to get a look - the rear are easiest to get at) but you should bypass the fader.

Could I just leave the rear speakers routed through the fader and connect the front speakers directly up to the new unit?

If so, would the signal to the rears still be restricted by the fader?

Thanks

Try to run the speaker wires for the rear speakers under the carpet using a straightened out wire coat hanger. It should take you 5 minutes per rear speaker,

Running new wire sounds like the hot ticket.

I will do that next week when I install the new unit.

Thanks

when you get the wires under the back seat make sure that you tape them down completely so that when you remove your rear seat next time you will not rip the wires out of the speakers. Since you are running wires anyway now would be a great time to run a 4gauge power wire, 4 channels of RCA cables and a 16 gauge remote turn on wire to the trunk for an amp later. Leave the excess wire rolled up under the front seat. What head unit will you install? Hopefully another Sony.

I just cheaped out and bought a Kenwood KDC-222.

Too many other things to buy right now.

Thanks for the suggestions.
