Scott, I Know You Can Help Me W/my Mb Cd Changer !!!!!!

SCOTT ,YOU SEEM TO KNOW IT ALL !! HELP !! WE JUST PRUCHASED A MB FIBER OPTIC CD CHANGER PART #A2038209089 FOR A C230 KOMPRESSOR. WE HAVE THE TWO PREWIRED CABLES IN OUR TRUNK AND HOOKED THEM UP TO THE UNIT. THERE WAS POWER TO THE UNIT AND THE STEREO RECOGNIZED IT WAS THERE, ALTHOUGH WHEN I PUSHED THE CD BUTTON ON THE RADIO IT SAID "NO MAGAZINE". THE MAGAZINE WAS IN AND ALL THE DISCS WERE IN AS WELL. I THINK THERE IS SOMETHING UP WITH OUR MAGAZINE. AT ONE POINT ONE OF THE DISCS WAS HALF WAY IN THE DISC CHANGER, AND STUCK !!! YOU ARE THE ONLY PERSON I KNOW THAT CAN HELP !!!!!

Was the cd changer new when you purchased it? It sounds like it has a problem internally. The last time I saw this the cd changer had been dropped in shipping!Where did you get it?

Scott

HI SCOTT, THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY. WE PURCHASED IT FROM A STEREO STORE OFF OF E-BAY. IT LOOKS BRAND NEW, THE STORE STATED IT WAS A NEW ORIGINAL MB CHANGER. IT CAME PACKAGED VERY WELL, WITH FOAM SURROUNDING IT , AND WITH THE TRANSPORT SCEWS INTACT. THE ONLY THING "FUNKY" WAS THE MAGAZINE DID NOT LOOK ORIGINAL. IT LOOKED NEW BUT IT WAS "RED" !!! NOT WHAT LOOKED LIKE THE ORIGINAL BLACK MB MAGAZINE , IF THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE AT ALL. THE CHANGER HAS A SERIAL NUMBER ETC, AND A MB FACTORY STICKER WITH MODEL NUMBER PART NUMBER. ANY INSIGHT FROM YOU WOULD BE GREAT. THANKS

Spunky:
First of all the all capital letter posts are really annoying, please turn off the cap locks.
I don't know if Scott has seen this before, but if you are installing the newer style CD changer into a 202 or 210 chassis and are having problems, I think I know the problem.
The newer changers are coming through set up for horizontal mounting, like for the glovebox of the 203 chassis. If you put it into a 202 or 210, it is going into the trunk and is mounted vertically. You have adjsutments on the side of the changer itself (take it out of the bracket) to change from H to V (horizontal to vertical). You need to pop the small plastic door off the side to change it. This, believe it or not, can cause all sorts of problems, including mainly your problem, the radio will display "NO CD", NO MAGAZINE", etc, as well as the changer skipping when driving on rough roads. No idea why your magazine is a different color.
You also have to take the car to a dealer and have the programming in the radio changed to reflect the addition of the CD changer, so the radio "knows" the changer is on the optical loop. The radio can also lock up or report "NO CHANGER" etc if this is not done, although it may do it only at certain times, not consistently.

Thanks Gilly for your response. Hope the caps lock didn't mess with your head too much! Thats the "Lazy mans way of typing" The Cd changer was changed to vertical before installing it , that was a great tip though. So what you are saying is there is no way for the Cd changer to work unless I take it to the dealer to have it programed with the radio. My discounted Cd changer keeps creeping up in price !! Any idea how much they are going to charge me? And any idea how long this takes? You sound extremely knowledgable and I appreciate all your advice. Do you have any other ideas as to why the magazine would get stuck. At this point I'm either going to have to get a new magazine, or return the whole unit !!! Thanks again

They will usually work at least a while before they lock up or in some manner stop working, like displaying the "NO CD" etc type messages. Maybe yours is a little "pickier" for some reason. No explanation for the cd getting stuch though. If it just did it once, maybe just ignore that for now. Or if it'll be easy to return, try that. Does the player have the MB logo on it? Maybe it just needs a correct magazine, again I've never seen anything but a black magazine.
The fiber optics cable can't be bent very much, so make sure it is routed fairly smoothly, no kinks or sharp bends in the fiber optics line.
Some dealers may not even charge you for reprogramming the radio. It's something we normally wouldn't charge for at our dealer if it were brought in with that particular request, we'd just do it in the service drive. If it were brought in with a complaint like yours, just brought in for diagnosis for the problem, we'd end up with it in the shop and possibly spend enough time on it that we'd expect some pay for it (although the programming would also be changed in the radio). If it were brought in and you'd just ask us to reprogram the radio because you added a CD changer yourself, we'd do it in about 5 or 10 minutes and not charge anything. I am not 100% sure, but I believe the scanner that they have at the MB dealership (or an independent MB shop which has bought/leased the MB equipment) is the only equipment which can make this programming change to the radio.
