CD Changer for 93' 600 SEL

I just purchased a 1993 600 SEL. I am looking for a CD Changer that will work with the original factory radio/cassette.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

What happened to the factory changer? Your car should have Becker 10 disk CD changer in the back.

CD Changer for 93' 600 SEL

Don't know where it went, if there was ever one installed. The owners stereo manual does say that a cd changer is standard on the 12 cylinder model, however, it's gone now.

I bought the car from the local Mercedes dealer. Salesman said the car has no CD player. He directed me to a couple of local audio stores but each said they had nothing that would allow me to use the factory radio/cassette directly.

Any ideas?

You can restore factory configuration by installing used 10 disk Becker, or you can go with aftermarket Alpine 6 disk unit and adaptor. If you car still has original radio I'd suggest you look in the trunk behind left side liner and see if you still have original cable for the changer. This cable you will need in both cases and its about $100. You need to look for the cable hurness with two DIN connectors and black power rect. connector with red and brown wires.
If you go with Alpine you need:
Q-6-82-0135 -- software interface $135;
Q-6-82-0174 -- adapter harness $50;
Q-6-82-0175 -- cable set $98; (Only if you don't have it)
Alpine CHMS630 CD Changer $184;
Peripheral adapter MBZALP9 $37
These are the prices I paid when I did mine. If you do need a cable Q-6-82-0175, I have it for sale as well as factory Becker changer and bracket from my 92 600SEL.

CD Changer for 93' 600 SEL

Mike,

Thanks for the info. You've been very helpful.

One more question. Was there a particular reason you changed from the factory changer to the Alpine configuration? Do you prefer one over the other?

Thanks,

Brian

Brian, the Becker has some skipping problem, but later I've discovered it was not set up properly: it was set to horizontal orientation on one side and to vertical on the other. I like Alpine, but miss 10 disk capability of Becker on the long trips.

Mike,

If, in your opinion, you feel that the Becker 10 Disc Changer that you have, if installed properly, will work without the skipping problems, I may be interested in purchasing it from you.

How much?

Thanks,

Brian

Brian, I'm not sure it will work without skipping. It was not set up properly, but this unit was made in 1991 and maybe needs repair and/or adjustment. I have no way to test it now.

Mike,

I appreciate your candor.

I spoke with my salesman at the dealership, and he has located a new factory replacement changer. $400 installed by dealer.

This is my first time on this forum and it has been very rewarding! Thanks for the help.

The other reason to use the alpine is that you can choose between two different models one can play mp3's even. They are much more reliable and if it breaks it is cheaper to put a brand new one in than fix a becker 0980 changer! Just my 2 cents worth! If you are interested I do sell the whole set up for your car including instructions!

alpine cd changer

mike, our 93 600's both have the 6 pack changer; I'm curious if there was a change from the 10 pack becker by the dealer(s) under warranty or if later built cars came standard with the 6 pack alpine. I believe the build date for the sel was in nov/92, and the mb service records don't indicate a change of cd units.

Also again thanx for the past responses when I had a no start with the sel, you got me going.

I have the 10 disc Becker changer in my 1992 300SD and I will tell you..if you have the opportunity to the use the Alpine 6 disc for the same money..go for it
While I like the 10 disc capability the changer skips much easier than later units
I think MB installed the 6 disc when the 10 discs went out under warranty as I think the 10 disc units are fairly probelematic when it comes to CD changers
My personal skips easier than other brands and it also has to be reset every few months for no reason...when the cartridge gets stuck in the changer
