Old Mercedes Radio wires??? Help!!!

Hello everyone,

Don't shoot!!!!!!! This is not a diesel question but is a Mercedes question. You guys are always so good at solving some pretty tough problems for so many folks so I thought I would ask this.

I am replacing the original radio in my '82 240D and wanted to know if any of you could tell me which wires do what. Like what color wire goes to the right speaker and what color wire goes to the left and so forth. I am NOT an electrician and I do not relish the thought of burning out a new radio/CD player or burning out something on my automobile. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Oilslick

If I remember correctly (doubtful) brown to the right and green to the left. It's easy enough to just hook one up temporarily and see which side sound comes from.... that's what I did. Now if I could just get that darn power antenna to work (don't know what wire for it)! Probably about the worst you could do is blow the fuse so just make sure you have a few extras before you start. A voltage tester will show you which other wires to use.

If you get the power antenna to work let me know which wire it is..... or do 240's have a power antenna. I don't know if something is wrong with my "new" stereo or if the antenna suddenly went bad at the same time I installed it.

Yes!

My 240D has a power antenna but it doesn't work. I am going to Autozone or Advance Auto Parts to get an aftermarket antenna.

Is the motor bad on you antenna, or is the mast just bad. If you can hear the motor running, then all you need to do is replace the mast. You might also have a bad switch or dirty switch. To fix this you can pull the switch out, and open it up and clean the contacts. As for the wiring, I have no idea on, since I havn't had the pleasure of installing a new radio in one.

hi oilslick,

i have a Hirschmann Antenna. However it's not the one where you can actually adjust the height.

But it is an OEM replacement as in, it's the one that the dealer would sell u if u ask for a replacement.

It cannot be adjusted for height unlike the original and you also need a new rubber grommet to put in place of the chrome 'washers'

if you want it, i can sell it to you for not too much. Otherwise I'll just play around with it

Hey oilslick,

Do a search of this topic and you will find alot of good advice. I just put in a new alpine in my 84 300d and it was a pain in the neck to figure out the wires. It is late right now but i did post in the past all of the details. Here is what I can remember. Actually I cant remember without looking it up. The main problem I had was finding the power antenna wire. It is customarily blue and it is blue on the benz however it is wrapped in black shrinkwrap so it looks black. I believe that is is the blade connector that inserts into the back of the grand prix.

I rewired all of the speaker wires bypassing the fader switch as you will loose power if you go through that. The old radios are 2 channel with a resistor which seperates them into front and rear. I recommend that you bypass that stuff. It is a pain as you have to run wire to the rear deck.. I removed the rear seat, which can be a pain in the neck, but since I did it before when I changed the shocks. I would also run some rca cable back now if you are ever to consider amping the rears as you have it all open.

Soder the wires together, using flux, and have some fun....

good luck,

bob c

If I remember I did use a Volt tester, But when I found an original Becker Europa with shortwave I put this radio in. I saw the power , ground , wires when I pulled the after market radio out. Sorry I dont remember the wire code colors but its very easy to check these as others have said, I really like the stock radio the knobs all match with the rest. I really dont need or care to have a lot of power I mostly listen to talk radio and I really like the shortwave broadcasts in the car riding down the road. Hope this helps you a little.
