I have asked this question once but didn't get a reply. Just wondering if someone can tell me, perhalps scott??, the following:

1) What speaker , otherthan OEM of course, can I buy to replace the existing speakers. I guess the rear and the front and rear door for a start.

2) What else do I need?? I heard I need something to push the ohm output from the 1432 from 2ohm --> 4ohm

Even brand and model number specific will be good. I don't need fancy stuff, even OEM will satisfy my needs.... My existing speakers are getting poor and I want to do the change without changing the look and feel from the head-unit.

How is it you know it is your speakers that are going bad and not your amplifier? Usually it is the bose 7 ch amplifier that is the problem. The rear door speakers are smaller than 4 inch and are @3.75 inches and are 2 ohm . The fronts are 5 inch mids and a tweeter and are 2 ohm. If you are replacing the speakers you will be best off using oem speakers or replacing the amp and the speakers if you dont want to go with factory. We need to talk about the diagnosis before you replace the speakers.

First thing first, thanks a million for your response. If I am near where you are at, I would love to bring my car to you. But I am not in the states and I am hesitated to spent money on technician that doesnˇ¦t know the complicated 11 speakers system!


You are right, how do I know. Well I am only guessing. Mine is a 92 early model W140, 300 series. I don't think I have the bose 7ch amp as I don't have the bose label on my speaker grill nor can I find that BIG black thing which I think is the 7ch amp unit.

Secondly, I think itˇ¦s the speakers as currently my speakers do make sound just that its mashed or cracks or whatever you call it. I would think if the amp were gone, that speaker would not make a sound. Right??

My question is this:

1) Am I right regarding my case for having, or not having, the 7 ch amp??

2) If I do have, do you have procedures for testing which one is wrong?

3) If my amp is faulty, can I replace the amp and speakers to non-OEM, say Alpine, but leave the head-unit in place? If so, recommendations???

4) Do you sell OEM speakers?

I had crackling and distortion on my 92 500 sel. I thought it was the speaker, took the front door apart. was not the speaker. The asembly in my car was a oblong plastic box which housed the speakers. I think you could make brackets to hold new speakers or open the box and install some. I found out that the "bose amp" sits up over the wheel well next to the gas tank and is accesible by removing the wheel liner and gas tank liner. This "amp is notorious for getting leking capacitors. Becker offers an exchange and there are people who repair them. I hope this helps.
BTW all audio is routed thru this amp including the fader and the speaker over the mirror. The speakers on either side of the dash are used for the cellular option, so dont expect any sound out of those. The tuner and preamp also use some of those capacitors, you can reverse the inputs to check for change,

I believe all W140s had the BAose system. I have a 1992, my rear ( 4 subs across teh rear deck were cracking, squealing etc. Bad amp just the left rear bass channel. I do have poping and scratching intermitently form the right rear door speaker.

I Put ina new head unit ( Sony ) with a 10 disk CD changer ( car didn't have a CD cahnger. I used teh Stock Bose amp for all 7 forward speakers - front and rear doors and center channel.
I install an aftermarket 2 cahnnel amp for just eh subs.

Sounds awesome. I did it my self.

You can use the factory HU and ad an aftermarket amp.
You need adjustable line level adapter/convertrers.

I just got my 1992 300sd. I had a 87 300SDL that looked just like your gasser!!!! 390,000KMs ran better than when I got. But NO comparison to W140 chassis!! WOW!!

ALso if look up behind your rear view mirror on the outside of the center speaker it will have a BOSE logo on it. (It says BOSE in their famous script.

Also the amp is $800 CDN to have becker fix it, they just fix and give you 1 year warranty on the amp. La Jolla audio will give you a 3 year warranty, fix it nad do some preventitive improvements to it for $800 US. Ilike the LAaJolla audio proposal better.

Your proposal sounds good.... keep the becker head unit and install after market amps and speakers.

Do you have some guidlines on how to do it? Perhalps you can tell me what amp you purchased and what speakers you purchased and I just use those.

I don't live in the states so sending it in for repair is not an option open for me!

If you are going to go new I would recomend going all new as the problem you are experiencing actually could be the becker tuner module (#1532 )in the US. If you have the speaker behind the rearview mirror you will have the bose system. There are no easy tests to perform other than switching the output of the tuner module to see if the problem moves side to side.

I am going to see if I do have the BOSE system or not. I really don't think I do have it as I have seen other W140 having the BOSE label on speakers grill.

I will check my centre console, the rear view mirror, for the BOSE word. I will try, if I have time, take the boot interior apart and find the BLACK 7 CH BOX.

Right now, I really don't want to go for a new system as the car is getting old and don't want to spent the kind of money. plus removing all the trimming to install new cables may damage the old plastics thich does more bad than goods....

That looks like the alarm module as becker makes the oem alarms in most of the mbz's. If you could post a better/larger close up picture than I can see what the units are.
