I put a 15 inch tube in the back of a w123 and like it

Hey folks,

I often ask for help when things are going wrong but I also like to let everyone know when I do something right.

I was having a hard time getting any bass throuth the trunk until I put a 15 inch tube enclosure back there. It fits just fine and man I like the bass it puts out. I have it modestly amped with a boss 150 watt amp. The great thing is that the bass will penetrate the rear seat now as before with 2 10 inch woofers it had a hard time.

I am happy with it. When it comes to bass penetrating a lot of steel and seating go big.

good luck

bigger subs in a w123

I'm surprised that 2x10" woofers did not work very well for you as compared to 1x15". You did mention a tube enclosure on your 15" and that may be a reason for more "punch".

It is difficult to get bass sound from the trunk into the passenger cabin of a W123 because of the fuel tank and seats that are in the way. One workaround would be to remove the first-aid tray which results in a nice opening directly into the trunk. This will allow sufficient bass sound to enter the cabin. For aesthetic purposes, you can cover the hole with speaker cloth.

An idea:
Have the woofer box ports feed directly through the 1st aid box into the cabin, using PVC tubes. Whooeeh!

Yeah I was suprised also that the two tens did not do as well.

to be honest you cant even compare them.

The size of the woofer determines the length of the waves that the speaker can produce. Tweeters do high frequency short waves and woofers produce low frequency long wavelength wave. Longer waves have more penetrating power as demonstrated when a car with a boom speaker goes by. You only hear the bass. It have less of a tendency to be absorbed than the higher frequency. I have thought about building a special enclosure and removing extra stuff along the rear seat such as relocating the vacuum accumulator but this solultion is much easier. I dont even have a great amp pushing it. It sounds great. Dont let anyone tell you that a 15 will sound like crap or that it is too much bass. they dont understand that we need boatloads of bass to get through all that rear seat stuff.

Also you can always turn the bass down at the head unit.

have fun
