How to tap into unused cell phone wiring in 96 sl320?
 

Can someone post the wiring pinouts for the connectors on the cables in the dash storage area originally designed for the factory cell phone? After removing the blanking plate I see two 12-pin OKI connectors and one mini-phono jack. Is the jack for the built-in microphone? Will the cabling give access to the audio input on the stereo? I'd like to hook this up to the stereo output on a PDA to play MP3 music files, and to get power through a voltage converter. Or do the cables just go to the trunk for an optional cell phone black box?

I'm sorry if this info is already posted - I've not been able to track it down with several searches.

I dont have an answer for you, but I do have a 96 SL500 with the integrated phone. Keep me posted on your progress as I would love to be able to take the pin outs on the car phone cable and splice them into my Sprint phone.

I have a schematic for the cell phone, but it is dated May of '92 and may not be the same. But I imagine it is fairly close if not identical to '96.

The pair of 12-pin connectors are shown. One goes to the telephone handset cradle, and the other goes through a connector to the Transmit Receive Unit.

The schematic shows a "Cellular Telephone Radio Mute Relay" module. If you were going to try to use the ex'g wiring to patch-in an additional audio input, I think this module would be required. Is it included with cars that have no factory phone? I don't know. But at any rate, it handles just one audio signal, so you surely wouldn't want to use it for stereo...

bobterry, I'm guessing you are correct that the hands-free phone speakers are set up as mono, not stereo. That's fine for connecting to my iPAQ to read audible news stories, emails, etc, and possible use for a hands-free phone. I'll probably need to put in a small amp also which should be easy for low fidelity audio.

So I'd love to see the schematic that may help to indicate pinouts and functionality. Any way to send that over electronically? Or to mail a hardcopy?
