Speaker polarity reversed at the factory?

As I was installing a new head unit over the weekend, I noticed a "mistake" in the wiring - the leads to the right front speaker were swapped, with the brown wire going to the positive (small) pin and the color wire going to the negative (flat) pin. I checked the polarity at the plug-in connectors, and they both checked out the same, so I figured the wiring might have just been accidentally swapped somewhere down the line, and rewired it so both front black leads were wired to the receiver's negative connections.

However, when I put everything together and turned on the receiver, I swear it sounds like the polarities on the front two speakers are switched. The balance is tilted off towards the left side, bass response is a little goofy, and the soundstage is a little "spacey."

Has anyone else noticed this?

Switched the wires back yesterday. Turns out it was the driver's side, not the pass. side, connector. It sounds a lot better, at least in terms of bass response with all four speakers going.

I'm guessing that the whole left side is swapped, and when I originally wired it, it threw the left fr/rear speaker pair out of sync w/ each other. I wonder what it sounds like with both speakers pairs wired the same way?
