power antenna removal w124

it looks like I have to pull my power antenna motor to check for problems. Can someone post the proper procedure for doing this operation? Is there anything I need to watch out for?
Thanks in advance

Because the antenna has a constant power, disconnect the ground (-) from the battery before working. You'll have to reset your clock and radio stations (and enter the code if your radio has anti-theft). Start by pulling back the trunk carpet on the driver's side, which will give you access to the trunk interior side panel panel. On some cars, the panel is friction fitted so you just have to flex it out, on others there are fasteners to undo. With the panel out, the antenna motor and bracket are clearly visible. The antenna connection threads off, the wiring harness is a plug in unit and there'll be a braided ground strap. Loosen the nut on the antenna mast on the fender along with the rubber grommet and you can remove the motor.

Thanks, followed your insructions and everything came out ok. Now, itlooks as though the electric motor in the unit is shot, because i am getting power to the unit. Can the elctric motor be replaced or will a whole assembly have to be purchased?

Technically, the antenna motor can be rebuilt or serviced, but you have to weigh that option versus finding a good used one and installing it. I recall that rebuilt units are over $200. I would avoid the $40-50 "universal" Hirschman units that you see for sale on E-Bay, etc. because, while they will fit, you can't guarantee that the automatic raising and lowering function will work and you will have to configure some sort of adapater for the wiring plug, not to mention figuring out which wire goes to what plug. I would suggest that you get the part number off of your unit and make a few calls to local or national recyclers and see what you can find. Good luck.
