Talking Which radio did my car come with?

Alright alright... I have a 1987 560 SL that the previous owner thought they were being really cool and installed a goofy aftermarket radio. Does anyone know which radio this car may have came with and where I may be able to find one?

Thanks and happy motoring!

Post this in the "Car Audio" forum and see if Scott of "LaJolla Car Audio" will reply. He is very knowledgeable about MB installs and head units in general and even repairs OEM head units.

He might be able to procure one for your model...

Here's an example of the Becker that was original to your car: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6774&item=2413721570
Obviously, it can be had.

You'll often see 560SL's with aftermarket radios, mainly because the Becker wasn't that great and also because many owners would like to have CD rather than cassette. My own has an Alpine that works very nicely; it looks OK but not original. I'm toying with the idea of eventually switching to a Blaupunkt AM/FM/CD selected for appearance consistent with the look of the car. A couple of examples would be:
http://www.blaupunktusa.com/receivers/receivers_01_rpd550.html
http://www.blaupunktusa.com/receivers/receivers_99picpage_toronto.html

Note that neither of these models are current, but can be had sometimes on Ebay.

I'm pretty sure that the ebay link shows an '88 or '89 radio. the '86 and '87 look almost the same, but instead of seperate buttons for SEEK and SCAN, it has one button labeled AUTOMATIC.

I also remember hearing that the '86 and '87 unit will require a code to be input after you install it. I don't believe the '88 or '89 version requires that.

But do as G-Benz recommends and ask this in the Car Audio forum. They should have the real scoop.
