1984 300 SD Antenna
Does anyone have a suggestion on replacing the antenna on a 1984 300 SD? Is there any specific type or brand?

Hirschmann is OEM
Denoted by a scripted 'H'. Check whether yours uses a serrated or smooth nylon guide by undoing the nut on top of the body and removing the old mast and nylon tail (either by switching the radio on with the antenna button on 'up' or pulling on the old mast if it refuses to come out).
Hirschmann is also the OEM antenna motor manufacturer. You can greatly increase the life of the replacement by giving the extended antenna a wipe with a non-oily cleaner when you wash the car. Oily lubricants decrease life by collecting airborne dirt and causing the mast to stick. The reason you see so many blackish extended antennas is probably attributable to incorrect use of oily lubricants. Mine stays shiny chrome for years. |
I believe the Hirshmann antenna is the only brand which will work... if you want it to go up and down like original one. Becker NA and others like Fastlane sell them. BTW, sometimes they just need the correct lubricant to go up and down... most here indicate NOT to use WD40... cannot recall what is recomended... something that does not attract dust.

You can replace the mast of the original antenna. Pretty easy to do.
