W124 Door Sub Question

Hey guys, I'd like some input on an idea I have for my door subs. I've been wanting to put a 10" woofer in the back but have recently thought about trying to use the door subs more effectively. My head unit is an Alpine 7892 which has built-in crossovers and a separate sub output. I was wondering if adding a separate amp for the door subs and running it off of the sub output in the head unit (effectively putting the front speakers and door subs on separate channels) would provide better sound than running both the fronts and doors on the front channel (in series)? I'm not interesting in "Ground Shaking Bass", just smooth, warm bass. Any thoughts on if this is a good idea and if so, what amp I should buy?

Also, anyone familiar with my Alpine unit that has any suggestions on frequency settings is welcome to chime in.

It aint a good idea as the more power you put to the doors the worse they sound. This was a stupid design. How many other cars do you see subs in the back of the front doors?

Well, I guess that's that. Thanks Scott. Your expertise is well regarded in this forum so, I'll take a different route.

Any suggestions on a low cost sub/amp solution for the 124? I've got Infinity Kappas front and rear and would like to stay with that type of sound quality.

Thanks!

I put a 6" compoent set in my doors, and the tweeters under the dash grills. sounds good.

I put 5.25" components in the rear.

I have my sub in a bandpasss box ported right intot he first aid kit.

Sound is definately clean, way cleaner than the factory stuff.

Deuce:

Try taking a look at a posting I did last fall on this subject. Feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions. I never did get pictures loaded - they would help explain what I did. Type this into the search field:

"Sub box for E class - Completed project"

Thanks Mike!

It looks like the only option I'll have is to go into the trunk. No worries. I think I'm going to hunt around for a single 10" free air sub (I heard Alpine makes a good one) and port it through the Emer. Kit. Not in a big hurry as it's cold here in NC and I don't have a garage to work in.

Thanks to all for the input.

Hey Ashman!

Hi,
Where did you find a 6" component speaker? Make? Model?
Everything I find is a 6 1/2".
Thanks,
John

I have a 10 inch bandpass box in the trunk with a 800 watt pyramid amp (cant remember if I have it running off 400 or if i have it bridged to 800) and it is "ported" through the first aid kit door. What I did is just pull the first aid kit out and put it in the trunk. Then I went into the trunk and foudn the hole in the metal shelf underneath that lined up with the first aid kit lid and kut out the parcel shelf through that hole (to the same size) and then with the first aid kit door closed you cannot tell the hole is there and it makes the sound much better. Now I just need to upgrade my head unit since the Blaupunkt Tokyo I have the button lighting has gone out.

My 4 dash/rear deck speakers are also infinity reference and they sound great. 4" I believe but thent hey could be 4.5", whatever the stadard 4" size is. I think Ive got a kinked or shorted wire somewhere because one of the back speakers is quieter than the other one and its not blanace because the front speakers are fine. I guess I have to pull the wire out and check it but I plan on adding a 4 channel amp for the main speakers (so I dont have to use head unit power).

so presently i don't have the capital to do the whole speaker revamp project, but i was wondering would it make any differences to make the door sub speakers at least a bit better than stock...?
anyway to make em sound better, obviously not expecting deep bass....?

Scott, what 's wrong with having Subs in the door, would they rattle too much? Can you explain futher? Subs are omnidirectional, as long as they're in the cabin you don't have to port them from the trunk and they don't have to be too large.

You are right about omni directional but the location is poor due to size of sub that can even fit and positioning is poor they actually cancel each other and ruin the phasing of the rest of the system. It is far better to install a single subwoofer in the rear deck.
