Are there any speakers that give nice bass??
 

My 300E has new speakers in it, but there just is no real good bass. Are there any good stock sized speakers that give good bass? Or will I have to abb a sub in my trunk?

are you replacing all 4 speakers or just the rear 2 stock ones?

I have a CD player (160 watt) and I've replaced both front and rears with blaupunkt, the bass sounds distorted. Do I need a small amp or more expensive speakers?

are you using the stock fader?

from my experience, distorted bass is a sign of crappy speakers or not enough power. No matter what however, you will not get good bass (for rap music of course) out of speakers that fit in the stock openings of our car, I would highly recommend some subs.

Distorted bass could be that you are trying to squeeze bass out of speakers that cannot do it. If your CD player does not have a built in crossover then you should try buying some bass blockers from crutchfield.
The speakers in the W124 dash and rear deck I found do not do well with bass below 160-200hz when powered from a deck.

Don't order the bass blocker yet.
Look at the crutchfield site and go
to "installation" order the foam
baffles this will improve the sound
quite a bit.
They prevent the cones from traveling
to far by compressing the air just like
in a subbox.
It gives them a little more power handling
and makes them sound so much better.

PS: for true bass you need sub(s)

1- Stop using deck power. That thing puts out 160 watts only in the wildest fantasies of the manufacturer's marketing teams. (this really annoys me, it's basically a flat out lie.) Your deck is probably only pushing 5-10 clean watts per channel, at best (read the specs carefully and you'll see they give TWO power ratings most of the time, one for peak at 10% THD, and another for continuous at ~1% THD. GOOD power amps are rated RMS from 20-20k at 0.0xx% with a particular input voiltage, usually 12v, not 14 (which understates the true power output). See the difference?).

2- Go buy a separate power amp. Any power amp will be better than the deck. A small one will fit under the passenger footwell plastic shield, next to the alarm brain box (which I removed anyway b/c it's a useless POS).

3- You'll only get so much bass out of little 4" front, and 5" rear, speakers. Don't expect a lot out of them. You'll need the power amp, pluss a crossover (or "bass blockers"), and a sub in the trunk. Better yet do what Shanta said and go with the full Jehnert kit.

Yes, but that pulls the soundstage to the rear of the car. When was the last time you went to a concert and put your back to the stage? You want the best possible speakers in the dash & door, the rear speakers are for fill only... shoot, you can leave the stock ones in there if you want. In a properly tuned system, you should only notice the rear speakers if they are turned off. All the sound should seem to come from the front. Much easier said than done, of course... :D :D

Exactly, Now i just wish i could find a place to get a set of Bose 4X6's for the dash. I have a set of component speakers (JL audio 525cs xr) but I cant find a place to mount them without spending a ton of work and time in makeing custom enclosure. So I am just going to go with some Bose speakers

Much easier to just put nice 4-inch coaxials in the dash, with a little adapter plate. Few, if any, good 5.25" speakers will fit up there (at least on a 124/201, not sure about 126). Here's what I did on one car:
