Speaker Questions on a 92 300E
Ok, I've done my searching, and it seems the speakers are 4.75" exactly. Now, is that for the fronts, rears, and the doors?
Aside from that, I was wondering if anyone knew of any higher end (great sound, not the $2000/pair best) manufacturers that make this specific size? If I can't find the specific size, I'll be considering Infinity and MB Quartz. To the guys who have installed larger than factory speakers, what is the biggest you've gone without changing out the factory grills (or atleast having to)? I'm working on kind of a funky setup, so you'll probably see me as being more of a pita in the near future |

Ignore my blatant stupidity regarding the fronts and the rears. I actually have the article on removing the radio and speakers from a W124 already printed out, and used it to figure out what was different between my W123 and my W124
Now, front is 4 5/8" (119mm-1200mm), rear is 5 1/8" (127mm), but what about the speakers in the doors? Haven't figured out if I need to really go nuts to get the panel off either. Is there an easy way to remove these speakers? I'll just measure them myself if necessary. Oh, and anyone who hasn't looked at gsxr's setup, I suggest you do. His setup, as well as some of the work he has done with the alternator, door panels, and more, has given me quite a few ideas to work with. His pics are here. |

The door speakers are 6.5 inches. You will have to remove the door panel in order to get access to them.

The fronts are 120mm... at least in my car. There are 2 speakers out there that will be exact fit for the fronts.
1) Rainbow Audio SL-120 which can be purchased from La Jolla Audio for $160/pr. Rainbow also has an IQ-120, but I don't know how it compares. Scott (SCLJA) is a regular contributor to this forum. His website is http://www.lajollaaudio.com. Rainbow's website is http://www.rainbow-car-audio.com 2) Blaupunk IC-114. These can be purchases from Steve Brotherton's Continental Imports for $96.18/pr Steve's website is http://www.continentalimports.com I'm still trying to find out which sound better.

Thanks guys I've done kind of a preliminary config of what I'm thinking of with audio. As I nail down manufacturers, I'll be amending this design, and further planning the amp rack. I've attached the design below.
The one amendment I've made so far is to the power distribution block, which I'll be moving to the trunk so I don't have a million wires running through the passenger compartament of the car. Thanks for the input, and I'll keep everyone updated as I spend lots of money pointlessly wjm: One problem, lajollaaudio.com isnt working |

Yeah, thats the way I'd have to do it. I'm going to have to talk with gsxr, I noticed he had done the same thing in his setup, though the company listed as the US distributor for it had nothing about it on their website.
I may simply end up buying some used/aftermarket door panels and cutting them up, I'm not really sure yet. |
