Speakers Size For 90 420sel?

Can someone tell me the quickest and easiest way to get into the rear speaker grills without tearing things up? Also, what was the size speaker used from the factory for the rear. I have one that is a dud and need to replace. Thanks. Scott

The back seat has to come off - a tab at either end of the rear seat bottom, slide outwards then pull seat bottom forward and up; 3 8mm head screws along the bottom edge of the seat back, then lift seat back off hangers and pull forward (it takes a heck of a lift); pull speaker grilles forward then up (be very judicious of how you apply preasure because 13 years of baking in the sun has made them brittle.

The main speakers are the 6.5" variety but the factory speakers are molded into an angled cylinder base. Some folks cut off the old speakers and glue on new speakers. A 90 might have separate tweeters.

You can pull the grills and speakers without removing the seat easily. I use and eclipse 6.5 in coax speaker or there are alot of others that will work fine. You have to first pull the speaker grill forward then up then you need to unscrew the phillips head screws that hold the speaker mount in (2 each )and take the whole pod out, then you have to pry the old speaker out. Then I cut out an abs plastic ring that fits inside the speaker pod and has a hole in it the size of the speaker and I abs glue it in then you will have something to screw the new speaker to. Here is a pic same idea earlier car without 2 stock tweeters on each side.

- How do you apply pressure to a brittle grille?

- Can you remove the grille from a W126 with reclining rear seat without removing the seat? It seems that the hinged panel gets in the way. Or can you remove the hinged panel without pulling the seat?

SCLJA, I never did get the pics or link. If you or anyone else could post some pics or a link showing the steps of cutting the ring out(what it will look like) or how the grills are on, etc. that would be great. I have totally rewired a new Sony minidisc and CD changer in my 420 including all new wiring for the speakers. The one speaker has very, very little sound coming out of it. When the volume is increased to close to max, the sound is louder, but is extremely scattered with static. I figured I would just go ahead and replace both rear speakers. I cut loose from the factory amps and that has saved a lot of problems with the typical "whine" that you get with aftermarket stereos in these cars. I can only suggest that if you install the aftermarket radio, get rid of the factory amps and wire your speakers directly to the deck. It will save you a lot of problems with this whine.
