DIY radio repair questions (190E)

I have been trying to repair my alpine, and I have hit a bit of a wall. Symptoms were distortion, and one channel would not work until the radio warmed up, but would then play with light distortion in that channel after about 10 minutes. Switched channels at the back, and symptoms are the same, so must be radio itself. With the warm/cold behavior, I assumed the problem had to be silicon in nature, so I replaced the monolith. amp. chip on the output/power stage (back, vertical circuit board). Radio still has same symptoms. All components on this same board were then tested (caps, diodes, etc), but all seem 100% functional. Since there is also crackling when volume pot is changed, I now think that the problem must be upstream from the output stage in the volume control stage? I sprayed the pot with tuner cleaner, but this also was not successful. Any other amateur electronics enthusiasts fix their own?

thanks in advance for any input.

andrew

I have the exact same radio, and it did the same thing. Replaced it with a nice JVC unit that fits perfectly.

Other than staying stock, why are you trying to fix the OEM?

What you really need to do is to take the amp out of the trunk and send it to me for $20. :-)

Thanks for the reply. I wanted to keep the OEM deck in order to stay stock, and because I have the alpine changer in the trunk which runs quite nicely off of the factory deck. Unlike others, I thought it sounded fine... while it was working. Anyway, I may end up buying another off of ebay or something, but I thought that since this seems to be a common failing, someone could point me to the weak components.

andrew

oh, and I think I'll be keeping the factory sub-amp...

I would be willing to part with my working Alipine Active Bass Stereo with security code for $35 plus shipping. Let me know if you want it.

Dang! That was too easy. I would have offered mine but it had the same disease yours did.

ANYONE know where I can find the Aktiv Bass Amp? It only came in the 92, 93, and late 91 (like mine) models.

None ever come up on Ebay, and I've wearied of calling salvage yards.

Check www.car-parts.com Look up a 92 Mercedes 190 and select Radio/CD. If you scan through you'll find some amps mixed in there. Saw one posted for $50.

Hey Limited!

I'm definitely interested in your radio. Shoot me an email when you get the chance and we can set something up. I'm tired of checking capacitors!
