E-320 Stereo Backlight Kaput

The audio system in my '97 E-320 works fine, but the backlight in the window doesn't work. During the day, I can see what is going on (e.g. CD track no., etc.) but not at night. Is this a BIG fix? Is it worth fixing? I have searched the archives with no success. The dealer said I need a new "head" unit for $350-500. Thanks for the help and/or suggestions.

Does the lighting for the buttons work?

If so, then I guess you *might* need a new headunit. In that case, I would monitor ebay and buy a used unit for less money.

im saying might since I don't really know...

good luck

Holson Adi is right. I think you have a becker 1492 or similar. You can find those on EBAY and other places for a lot less.

I have one that I may be selling... not sure yet. I also have the 6-changer CD player.

Thank you Holson Adi and Willy for the suggestions. I'm on my way to ebay looking for a Becker 1492.

Does yours look like this?

I'm told that the 1492 and the 1692 are identical. They have very minor cosmetic differences (I think one has a bit more rounded buttons.

Yes, Willy, as near as I can tell, it looks exactly like the one in your photo. Is that the 1492 or the 1692? I appreciate your follow-up.

I got that picture off of ebay from a completed auction. This one is a 1692.

I posted on beckerautosound.com some time ago asking about the differences between the 1492 and 1692. Got the following response back from Horst Becker: "Only the Buttons look different.:

Just found 2 for you:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3034902301&category=3288
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=38639&item=2422851386

Also, don't worry about worn volume buttons. You can get them from becker for cheap.

Thanks again, Willy. Both of those you found on eBay look like perfect replacement units. I'm following them both. I appreciate your help.

What kind of CD changer do you contemplate to sell? I have a Becker Mexico 2330 for which I need a reasonably priced CD changer.

In case you are interested to sell, let me know if your changer would be compatible with my head unit .

Have not decided on selling yet. Regardless, it is the CD 6 changer that works in most 94-97 vehicles. I don't think it will work with yours.

I have not decided whether I will sell yet. Regardless, I don't think it works with that radio.... only the 94-97 vehicles... but I'm not 100% sure.
