I have a 1992 w140 300SE and live in Australia.

The amp is dead, I don't want to re-wire the car etc etc.

I just want a cheaper replacment amp.
Will look at fixing the Bose but would prefer a drop in replacement Option

Can't find one for looking.

any ideas/help appreciated.

Your amp is very specific for your car. To get a dropin replacement is not possible since it is a 7 channel amp and the plug is factory only. My suggestion is get the one you have serviced or exchanged and save the headaches. I just had my Bose 7 Channel Amp in my 92 400se serviced by http://www.soundrepair.com/html/vehicle.htm in Florida. It's very easy to remove and send to their location. The company specializes in repairing this model amp. Mine works great now. cost me $440 to have the unit.

I had my 7-channel Bose amp rebuilt by the Radioman in San Diego (619-298-5700) and they did a great job. Take the unit out of the car yourself and mail it to them. I carried mine in and got one-day service. About $600 and includes a warranty. (See www.radiomanrepair.com)

If these units are defective why should people have to pay for Bose's poor engineering?

How do you remove the amp from the trunk?

It's been awhile since I removed my amp. As you face the open trunk, the amp is tucked up near the hinge on your left side (i.e. the driver's side). To get access to the amp, you have to remove the interior trunk liner on the left side.

As I recall, there are some black plastic fasteners which are like a bolt inside of a bolt. You (gently) get under the head of the inner bolt (a small tack lifter works nicely) and pull straight up to remove it. After the inner bolt is out, the outer part comes out easily. There are a series of these standard fasteners throughout the trunk which you will need to remove to gain access to the amp.

Once you have access to the amp, there's a hold-down bolt or two and some electrical connectors to remove. The amp is the size of two large bricks and (as I recall) it is black and it's mounted in a brass-colored bracket.

The job will take longer, if you have the trunk-mounted CD player.

While you have the trunk apart to get the amp, you might consider whether your power antenna also needs attention. I had Radioman rebuild my antenna ($110) when I had the amp done.

Somewhere on this forum, somebody had photos and a removal procedure for the Bose amp, so look through the archives.

By the way, it's been a year since my Bose amp was rebuilt by Radioman and it is working fine.
