how do I get CD-R to play in my car?
I have an Eclipse CD player that was installed in '98. It plays original CD's but won't play any CD-R that I have tried. It gives a code 3 which is dirty disk. The CD player cost $350 back in '98 so I figured it would play them. Do you think it would make a difference if I used different brands of burners and CD-R?
Thanks David

I don't think that the brand of CD-R is going to make much of a difference. We tried a couple of different ones. We also have tried a couple of different CD-Burners. The first one was the Pioneer DVD Burner, and the second was the HP CD Burner (my old one.)

There are a few CD players that are finicky about the CD-R's capacity, but based on the age of your player, it's more likely an incompatibility issue with the burned CD's and the pickup laser in the unit. There were quite a few home CD players that were'nt able to read PC burned CD-R's.

Just a long shot here. Some cd-R bands seem to work better than others. Those cheap stack of 50 no name blanks should be avoided. Even though they may play on the drive that burned them, they quite often will not transport to another player. Try a name brand blank and burn it at the lowest speed you can. A low speed burn is "deeper" and has a better chance of playing on a finicky player. Also, you have to burn wave files, not mp3's, but I suspect you know that. I have an OLD Sony from 1983 and it will play CDr's just fine. Tod

He was using PNY CD's when he tried. That didn't work. Then we tried some no-name brand, and that didn't work either.

hi
let me say first that i am not sure of your computer experience so i'll start from the beginning. i have been doing this quite some time now. the issue as i see it is simple... take any mp3 song or a .wav file. using CD Creator (latest verison) (or nero) IMHO top 1 & 2 for ease of use. following the program instructions you simply pull whatever songs over to the create side. the software converts it to a readable format for a cd player then burns it to disc and that's it. the main issue is that converting say mp3 to wav or .cd is step 1. once you've got this complete almost all cd players will play the converted song. i do agree that brands like "value brand" or "PNY"are not quite as good as say memorex (which is now all i use). but the worse cd copy i have ever gotten was the inability to cache the anti-skip 20 or 30 seconds on my portable cd player... but the cd played perfect. now be sure when you end your copying or converting that you close out the session. and finalize the cd. otherwise only the cd that made the cd can read it. also be sure not to use a CD/RW. i have made a lot of cd's converting mp3 tunes and i'm gonna say they've all worked. one note however i use a 2 cd system. one regular cd and one cd burner. this makes it easy to copy from disc to disc. good luck craig

I know how to make a CD and all that but is what I am saying is that I have tried about 4 or 5 different burned compilations, and none of them worked. It always gives the code to "clean disk."
Thanks David

In my case, if I copied the whole CD to CD-R, it would play. But if I copied from the Windows Media's Libiray, it would not play except in the computer. Oh well, can't have everything so easy now.

hi
what i think i hear you saying is... if you copy a normal cd to another cd-r then you can play the cd-r in any cd player? but... if you use windows media library to copy one normal cd to a cd-r they won't work! ok then... what i believe may be at the root of the problem is one of 2 things. 1. there is a disk formatting session taking place during the copy process in cd creator. this may not be taking place. 2. the windows media library is not converting the music to a file that can be read by a stand a lone player. can you tell me exactly how you're approaching this copy session. are you copying a regular cd to a cd-r or are you trying to copy mp3 or wav files? when you do succeed copying a cd what software are you using? it sounds like your problem is with mp3's because you've said you can copy disk to disk and the cd will play. tks craig

Nothing. I just live with the fact that I can only copy the whole CD to another CD-R disk. No problem. I have two Mecedes and both have CD changer. So, if there is a good CD then I just copy it and put one on the other car. Media library? Gave up. And I have no idea what Mp3 is. Another type of CD?

hello dtkw
to be honest i've never tried the windows media software to copy cd's. i have always used cd creator. real easy software to use. as for mp3 that is a format that condenses normal cd's down in size. it's what all the stir is about the copy rights of musicans and record companies. things like napster, kazza and what not. mp3 format allows you to put say 200 or so songs on 1 cd. it reduces file size by 1 tenth say a normal song has roughly 31 ,000,000 [31 megs] it will reduce to maybe 3,000,000 [3 megs.] so you can see the advantage in storage. the one thing i would suggest is that if you're serious about your music you may want to invest the 60$ to buy cd creator. you'd be surprised a what you can do with the music and the files you can create. good luck craig

Hmmm, the Alpine Cd Changer I put in the 560SEL can play Mp3. Is Mp3 something you buy from the stores or you copied a few disks into one Mp3 disk?

hi
[ .mp3 ] is a format. just like .txt is a format or on cd's .cd is a format so first let me say if your alpine is .mp3 compatable i would think it would read .cd .wav what you need at this point is software to convert the .cd file (songs) to .mp3 go to cnet.com then go to downloads and search for say mp3 you'll get a bunch of programs that can do this. read thru them make your decision which one you want. remember you can get free shareware, trial 7 to 30 days or purchased programs. hint... most times you will find a shareware that will work just fine. take all your cd's convert them and place them in a special directory that can be found easily so when you go to burn them to disk you can find exactly what you want. so a 6 disk changer could be a 600 songs or more changer. pretty cool uh. so now if you work at it you can do just about anything you want with these files [songs] i have almost 40 gigs of music in mp3 format on my computer. that is a lot of songs, wav files etc: i make up what i want to hear. i think if you will research this a bit you'll find that burning cd's and mp3 are a piece of cake. imagine driving say 8 hours on a trip and never hearing the same song twice. you got a good alpine system. i'd do some research before i went any further. get a good handle on the mp3 world then decide how you will go forward. craig

not sure if the problem has been resolved or not. But.... I have an alpine that is a 2000 year model which simply refused to play the cd-r's as well. this is what i found out. the blank cd's that you bys has different quality. most are for data but you can easily burn songs too. and then there are "audio cd's" that cost twice as much as the regular blank cd's. when i burnt the songs on that cd and played the alpine worked fine. try a good brand blank audio cd like sony. it's worth a shot. good luck !
