Chicago Area car audio shops

Can anyone recommend a good car audio shop in the Chicago are? I have a 91 Mercedes SL and need to upgrade.

Most shops say they know what to do, but I they clearly do not have enough experiance.

I appreciate any help.

Well, I can't recommend a shop, but having done the job myself I can offer some advice. The wood console is very tricky to remove properly. It's awfully expensive if you have to replace it. The clips which hold it down in the rear are easlily broken. A good shop will have instructions for dis-assembling your car, ask to see them first. Talk to the tech who'll be doing the work. This is NOT a cheap Mazda and you don't want a 19 year old rookie doing the work. Make it clear that the shop is responsible for any damage to the wood console or other components. The speakers in the doors are not a standard size, but fortunately are of good quality to start with. Wiring new speakers is a problem because the Becker has a seperate power amp for the woofers in the doors. The actual "radio" part of the system is in the trunk. Adding speakers in the rear is possible, but again, dis-assembling the area for access is difficult. That said, a really good after market CD / Mp3 / SAT / what have you / is so much more satisfiying then the original cassette unit. If you have specific questions, please ask. Tod

This is the place where I always use to go to get telephones installed in cars (the old days -- early 90's) -- they always had a number of beautiful cars getting fitted for sound -- I assume that since the day of the auto telephone has passed that they are doing sound systems almost exclusively. You might give them a call. Let us know if they are still anygood.
