W140 Speaker replacement.

I have a 1995 S600 Coupe. I also have a 1991 560SEC on which I have done a complete replacement of the factory system. I like the results in the 560 and am looking forward to doing the 600. My question is what size speakers to use in the 3 door locations and the front dash. I have been told that the door has 5 inch, 3.75 inch and 2 inch openings. Any chance I can make slight modifications to use 5.25 inch, and 4 inch in the 2 larger door openings? Also what will fit in the dash locations? I am looking at using Focal or Alpine components in these locations and the 6.5 inch locations in the rear parcel shelf. Thanks in advance for any help.

i have a set of focal polyglass components

the midrange bolted in no problem

the bass was a *****. in the end I mounted it slightly 'skew'

the tweeter I used the cup that it comes with and mounted it on the material bit just below the glove box / dash right next to the door. seemed easy

with the bass speaker I had to punch out the backing of the fibreglass box as the focals are deeper than the MB ones.

I hid the crossover behind the kickpanel.

nice clear sound, but not enough bass for me- thinking about adding a bass speaker in the funny little cubbyhole in the rear seats armrest hole thing.... what do you think?

Thanks for the reply. What size are your focals? Are they the 165mm 3 way? Was your problem with the bass install in the door? I'm thinking about putting the 165mm in two of the rear parcel shelf locations, two 136mm in the large door openings and tweeters in the other 2 door openings on each side. For bass, I'm putting 2 Dayton titantic II's in a sealed box in the boot with two of the rear shelf speakers removed for sound passage.

part of the fun I had was that the bass speakers are 5" holes, and the mounting holes are not even - but if you are putting 136's in the hole, then with a bit of MDF (fibre-board) andf a jigsaw......

the mid-range was easy - its a normal speaker.

I didnt wasnt to lose any boot space so the bassbox idea is out for me.

Did you install 136mm 3 way speakers? 5.25 inch bass, 4 inch mid and a tweeter or two ways? If I understand correctly, 5.25's will fit in the 5 inch hole with some work?
