Good and reliable car radio/MP3/CD Player.
Dear friends:
Please recommend a good and reliable car radio/MP3/CD Player for under $150 (please state the model too). Is Clarion any good? Thanks a lot. Best regards, Eric |

The only thing I know about Clarion is that I purchased one in Japan when our ship stopped there during the VietNam war. It was a great unit and I used it for many, many years. Then again, that was over 30 years ago and I don't know about their quality these days. From my past experience, I wouldn't hesitate to try them again.

I have a Blaupunkt MP3000 and I'm very pleased with it. It sounds good and has plenty of power. The radio works well and the MP3 handling is great. My only complaint is that it is too bright when driving at night. It got it as new on ebay for about $130. Go to the Crutchfield web site and you'll find everything you need to know about selecting a nice unit for your car. Tod

Recently put a JVC into my wife's Avalon. It is a little over your price range. Sound is pretty good and MP3 handling is great. Am now in the process of converting my whole CD audio collection into MP3s. So . . . I'm looking around for a MP3 player for my 300CE. Only problem with current model head units is that they have a lot of silver colored plastic on the face. There are not very many all-black faced units on the market any more. The silver plastic looks out of place in a Mercedes. Also, in addition to an all-black face, I want the night time color to mimic the Mercedes white/pale yellow color of the other guages. It would look stupid to have a blue/red/green/etc. color radio in a white/pale yellow night lighted car. My search continues.

The Becker 1432 in my 91 300SE has some silver, it's not all black like older and newer Beckers. The Sony MP-30 doesn't look bad until all the red lights come on.

As you can tell from my post in this forum ("bought Eclipse headunit)....I really like Eclipse. It has MP3 capability. It's a bit more than $150 (retail), but if you're gonna buy an HU to use for years, you might as well not get something too cheap. I have the CD3403...it retails for $230, but I got it on sale for $200. If you move up one model you get an extra set of preouts with sub control and CD changer control. I need neither, so I went with the lower model.
As far as color of the face goes....it's not perfect, but better than others if ya ask me. The Alpines are a stark green (yuck) while others are just a myriad of all sorts of colors, shapes and designs (dolphins, race cars, etc). The Eclipse, like mentioned in my other post, has a simple whitish main display (very neutral) with the volume and select knobs having a small blue ring on them that you can only see when dark. Also, the face is mostly black with a small silver trim ring around the display. One of the few decks that you're gonna find that almost perfectly goes with an MB interior is a Nak, which if I remember correctly does not have MP3 capability...and it costs about $400. A note on buying off the internet. I don't know about other HUs, but I wouldn't do it for an Eclipse. 2 reasons. Warranty and the Security Network. I got a 3 year warranty on mine and a 1 year theft warranty. That means if my HU gets stolen, they send me a new one. Simple as that. If anything at all happens in a technical sense or otherwise with one you got off the internet, I bet you're gonna be pretty much SOL. The dealer actually registers your HU serial number with Eclipse, so it can be traced should someone steal it. So if the thief calls Eclipse wondering how the hell to unlock the thing, they have a chance at tracking him. They way they explained it to me is, professional thieves don't even bother with stealing an Eclipse, and the stupid thief steals it, but, through his own ignorance, is very catchable.
