If you don't want to cut the factory wires...

Yes, you do need to buy a wire harness. Some people recommend to rewire the speakers to avoid the factory farder on the console, which adds noise to the speakers. I have a very basic cd and it is connected to the factory speakers and it sounds fine to me. However, I did replaced the front speakers with aftermarket. NO noticeable difference in sound.
On the other hand, if you are going to use an amp and aftermarket speaker...that is a different story.

A wiring harness purchased for your specific car will have the exact plugs which allow you to simply plug into the wiring already there. That makes the job much easier. www.crutchfield.com has harnesses. You will still need to connect the harness to the one which comes with the radio, so it is helpfull if you are good with a soldering iron or a sleeve crimp tool.

J.
Check out the HU I got very recently (will install Tommorrow:)
Clarion dxz835mp, plays all kinds of discs, including mp3 and WMA files.
It's got changable color display, and it doesn't look too "flashy". Dual 24bit converters etc..Top of the line sort of. Fits nicely into my 89 wagon.
I bought it brand new from ---> www.thezeb.com for an amazing $219 (msrp is 499) with free shipping! The harness was courtesy of Crutchfield.
You can check how the display changes on the Clarion home page. I fiddled with the cheaper model before, the 735, but was not satisfied with the color selection to match my 300 TE's conservative interior (60 to choose from, comparing to over 700 in the new unit, which also changes from positive to negative display)
I believe, that there is a picture of this unit iluminated, posted somewhere on this forum. It kind of inspired me.
Cheers

124 Wagon Sound System

Hi Maciek,

What sound system do you have on your 89 300 TE wagon? Speakers, amp, subwoofer, etc?....I have a Nakamichi CD-400 head unit which I still have to install. Don't know what speaker, amp and subwoofer combination to put yet. It's ironic since I work for a company that sells car audio systems :-)

For the speakers, I'm leaning towards Diamond Audio, Boston Acoustics or MB Quart 4" component for the dash.

Ako,
I just cought your post on the way out of work......
Since my car is an 89, I've got speakers in the dash and in the rear doors. That's all. No factory amps no nothing.
I'm actually installing my new set up Tommorrow ( I don't go on the net at home!)
Here is the brak down:
*Clarion dxz835mp HU
*new speakers in the dash - Rainbows 120's (a friend got them for me on e-bay in Germany for 30 Washingtons!!!,) the same, you can get from Scott at LaJolla Audio for a little more - he ships.
*Crunch V4300 4ch amp (also from thezeb, although I think they sold it out)
*10 inch Audiobahn sub (forgot which one, but with a single coil one.)
*Older Clarion cd changer
*a Clarion box that makes my HU talk to the changer

For a long time during the planning stage I was agonizing over the placement of the sub. I considered a cargo bin in the back, where the third seat bottom folds in (there are pics and descriptions on the forum, somebody did this already, and it looks very neat) and maybe making a housing from fiberglass on the side across from the spare tire...
However I really didn't want to spend a whole weekend manufacturing something that could end up not working properly. so I just went to a local shop and picked up a Q-Logic enclosure of 0.65 cu feet. Not very slick, because it won't match my palomino int, nor will it hide, but easy. I can always change it later, if I totally hate it.
I also plan on determining whether I need the new speakers in the rear doors.
I'm going to play with it Tommorrow, and I will check the forum on Tuesday.
If you're interested how it went, just leave me a note.
I'll reply on Tuesday, or Wednsday, and now, I'm really out of here.
Cheers
Maciek
