I don't know about mounting speakers in the door panels, other than others have done it. I didn't read where you said you were gonna keep (upgrade) the dash speakers. if that's the case, many recommend just a mid-bass in the doors as you likely won't get much high-end from down there. The CL-6x is 6" by 2.25".

Also, I don't know which dash speaker upgrade (MBQuart?), but there's not alot of depth in my 87 300td and the 2" deep speakers I used just fit. You may be able to get a bit more, but I had to pull some of the fill material out and the magnets were pretty snug against the air ducts. Also, I had to widen the hole (I think the stock speaker is 5 1/8") and cut-off 1 or 2 of the screw flanges from the speaker - used a dremel for both jobs. My w124 is a PITA for speakers.

Yeap... that it is. I've been trying to dianose the nasty sound quality in my car so I got a pair of functional 4" Pioneer (quich sqowling guys.. I used to do pro audio and I have the hearing loss to prove it) and dropped them in. Bummer, either the factory head unit or that infernal fader is making the right channels sound like the speakers are full of pebbles).

Digressing. Being the fabricator I am I decided to sacrafice the frames of the old speakers to become homes to the new ones. Man.. worked like a charm! Not only do they drop into the factory holes they fit with no sound wave leakages. Plus it only took about 15 to fabricate the assembly (once I figured out how I wanted to do the first one - that took me a couple hours - I can post pics for those bored enough to care).

I then looked at the doors. Hm.. I can see where the speakers could be mounted in the aft section of the door. It's basically pretty clear of structure and closing off the back of the map pocked would provide some decent mid-bass. Hm.. I'd still love to see some pictures of your door speaker installs guys!

But I need to decided on a decent replacement HU since that seems to be the source of my horrid sound quality. BTW.. is that little fader control easy to source? I'm wondering if that little thing could be the source of the massive distortion or it's just part of the chain of audio missery? Also, where would I go looking for an 'amp' in this car if it has one assocaited with the fader.

And the last question.. where are the front speaker ground commoned? I'm wondering if anyone has tracked that down and spliced into the factory wiring there. I'd like to avoid R&Ring the dash spearkers again.. it's such a pain to get those little plasic screw covers off and one of these days I'm going to trash my dashboard..

Take a look at the door panel fabrication that ke6dcj did. I bet there are a few of us that would like to learn how he made these - it looks like a factory fabrication.

Just finished my front speakers. I got Rainbows from Scott at La Jolla Audio. They fit in without any mods. I had some trouble running the new wire to the drivers side. I used a coat hanger and about 1/2 an hour.

The backs are in Diamond Audio. I ran the door wires to each side. I am going to do the subwoofer next week.

How does the door panel come off to run the new wires?

The pic of the custom doors is great. I would like to find out if the person sells these pockets.

PS I cut the back of the rear deck (9 inches round). I will post pics soon.

door panels pretty easy. thers a few screws (that c shaped thing near the door latch mechanism, perhaps some by hte handle mechanism!) but you have to pry a lot of stuff off. then you basically just lift/ slide up the panel.

I did something like Neil's, probably not as sweet, but they aren't done yet....

I have some ideas on possibly a small run of panels like this if there were some interest.

I did mine for a 1992 500E, and I know the doors are different on earlier year models. I think the concept can be adapted and look very clean.

The vinyl was a poor match, but MB Tex would not work with the complexity of the curves. It will be re-dyed mb beige as soon as the weather cooperates (dry and warm).

I may do another set and change the grill to use the CDT grill rather than a custom inset grill. It would make the mould a much easier shape to cover in vinyl.

I did use CDT ES 3 ways. A 2 way would work well in this setup with a tweeter mounted just above the 6.5" driver.

I used fiberglass, some mdf and lots of time/elbow grease.
Moulded it to the factory doorpod skeleton.
The vinyl would match a 94-5 really well I think, but I need to dye it a bit darker to match my 92 doorpanels.
