w123 front speaker upgrade check-in

I want ot upgrade the front speakers in my 83 300D with some new 4" ones. I wish to leave the whole system stock, with the original becker europa.

Please post what 4" speakers you have used, if they dropped right in, and inf not, what modification was required.

Same info for the rears would be great as well.

Thanks!

JMH

I respect the Beckers, I wish I had the one that came in my car, but it's limiting, least one that age.

I'd recomend, in my semi-profesional opinion, the best speakers you can get that drop in and a good amp. It can be wired in so as not to disturb the factory connections, it'll just be work. I don't imagine the OEM headunit is going to push any "good" aftermarket speakers, and contrairy to popular belief, UNDERpowering a speaker will kill it as fast or faster than overpowering it. Not to mention it will soud less than ideal.

Mine are still original, but everything else is not.

Kenwood MPV-619
Sirius satalie radio
Kenwood Music Keg (www.phatnoise.com)

It's a start.

/edit/ If no amp and your staying with the Becker for sure, look for a lower wattage rated speaker, with a high sinsitivity rateing.

www.crutchfield.com as well.. They are outstanding in every way.

I put in some pioneer 4" front speakers. No mods neccesary. Don't remeber the model number, but they weren't very expensive. It sounds better then it did, but not great. PO had installed an amp and some yamaha speakers in the back. The amp is only hooked up to the rear speakers. It sounds decent, but it's just another thing on my list of things to get perfect.

Yeah I bought a pair of Pioneer 4" speakers from Best Buy. They had a corny blue cone and silver co-axial tweeters...

but they sounded pretty good! The whole system lacked bass, but clarity was good.

I dont know about size for direct replacement or anything, but I just looked at the Kenwoods and they seem too much.
Try http://www.zalytron.com/ call them talk to Elliot
Hes got Focals or JM Labs for about $140 cant beat the quality he may have some ideas for you, but its more than the speakers. If done right the whole can be much more than the sum of the parts, but Im afraid that the older Becker may not be your way to go. A system will never sound better than the weakest link good stuff will make bad parts sound worse so the whole system needs to be matched to sound best, and Im not very knowledgeable about car audio you can trust Elliot though hes very good.

I used 4" Sony Xplode speakers in front , they dropped right in using the stock screw holes and grilles. The rears are 5 1/4" (125mm) Sony Xplode and I had to slightly trim the package tray (not the metal) to install them. They're driven by the head unit @ 45 watts per channel. I removed the first-aid kit and made a grille to cover the opening. I have 2 Rockford-Fosgate 10" subs in the trunk driven by an amp connected to the head unit's pre-outs , and the base filters through the grille. I bought all the speakers at my local stereo shop for cheap , less than $200 Cdn .It sounds pretty good for the price I paid.

I put in a pair of Pioneer's more expensive 6.5" speakers in the rear deck (the pioneers arent exactly tall speakers, that's why they fit)

As a result I had pretty good bass from the back and I adjusted the head unit to pump out bass mostly from the rear speakers (Pioneer head unit too)

A 6.5 or 6x9 can put out some pretty satisfing bass if there of any quality and have a good power source. One one hand it hurts to cut anything on a car, but on the other if done well it looks very clean. I've been wacking rear decks for 6x9's and recarpeting with grey auto grade stuff for years. The carpet back there is usually faded and crudy looking anyway.

Any 4" in dash will fit?

Hi all, I'm not ready to change the Becker original unit but all my speakers are shot. Three different calls to Crutchfield and three diffrent answers (usally they are pretty good). So, keeping everything stock (no cutting and such), anyone have a drop-in, better-sounding speaker referal?
Thanks

Be careful about the profile "height" of the 4" speakers, many have cones that rise too tall to put the grill back on.
Polk audio makes nice speakers.
