Exclamation Beck. 1492 and Alp. S630 HELP !!!!!

Here’s the deal. I am working on my 1994 E420. It has the Becker 1492 radio and is prewired for a CD changer. I bought a brand spanking new Alpine S630 CD changer. I also bought an adapter from Crutchfield that links the alpine to the MB cable.

Hook it all up and…nothing. I took a meter and verified there was power at the MB cable. I plugged in the crutchfield adapter and found juice on its end. Plug it in the Alpine and nothing. What am I going wrong?????

Radio works perfectly well in every other aspect. As far as I can see there are no blown fuses.

You must have gotten the wrong adapter. Check with Crutchfield, they will help you.

Does the cd cartridge eject? If it does then you have power at the cd changer and you probably have bad capacitors in your 1492 keeping the cd contol from operating. You can unplug the 1492 deck power connection and reconnect put in the code and see if it responds to a hard reset.(leave the cd changer plugged in when doing this)

Thanks Scott, I tried a lot of different things in my panicked state so I don’t remember if I took those exact steps. I'll do so. But here is another interesting caveat. There are of course a set of 4 buttons on the top upper right hand side of the 1492 - AM/FM, WB, TAPE, and CD. When I press the “CD” button, it only SOMETIMES turns to CD mode, where it will say things like "LOAD,” or "TRACK" etc. Many times, you can press the "CD" button all day and nothing happens. When you click TAPE or WB for example, it will change to those respective modes instantly.

If the capacitors are bad...is it fixable or not. I’m not electrically inept so if it’s accessible I can probably do it. Any other ideas?

thanks a bunch

EDIT: Scott I forgot to address the focus of your post……which will probably change everything. When I press the eject button on the shuttle, the cartridge DOES NOT eject. This led me to believe that there was no power to the unit, but as I mentioned in my initial post, the voltmeter tells me otherwise. The Alpine shuttle was bought brand new sealed from factory, so a defective unit is unlikely but technically not impossible. Could it be a grounding issue? If so how exactly would I ground the shuttle, there are no grounding terminals on the shuttle.

It could be a grounding issue but to this day I can't remember seeing a doa alpine 630 cdc and I have done @ 1000+ of them. If the cd changer is not ejecting the cartridge and you can measure power on the output of the adapter then I would check the ground also. What brand is the adapter and what model # is on it? If the cd changer is not ejecting the cd then the radio is probably ok and not the problem if you measure power and ground at the adapter. Ypu can check the brown wires on the mbz changer cable at the trunk for ground.... It sounds to me like a doa cd changer. Good luck>>>>

What would I need to bench test the shuttle? Do you happen to have a diagram of the 8-pin connector? I'd like to not blow it up if possible.

I found this website that diagrams the 8-pin din cable.

http://www.integracaraudio.com/caraudio/diagrams/DIN.html

assuming I put 12VDC through pin 6 and 8, the shuttle SHOULD work assuming its not DOA right?

'94 E420

Hi all-

I've got the same set up, vehicle and stereo deck.

I've only had the car for 3 weeks and have nosed around a bit in the trunk looking for the CD changer connector. I've not wanted to tear the inside lining of the trunk apart and figured it should be right below the rear window and back seat ledge.

Any hits on where MB stuck these cable ends?

Thanks,

Mine was behind the panel on the right hand side of the trunk. Kind of around where the springs and arms are for the trunk lid. I just pulled it back far enough to shove my hands in there and fished around. You should see find it.

10-pin wiring

Thanks.

I found it just where you indicated. I was on the other side messing around.

Question: Is the Alpine S620 the deck of choice for the 1492? Have you gotten the S630 be made to work yet?

I'm watching a NIB (new in box) S620 on ebay but the S630 looks good, too.

Let me know

Thanks again.

I bought the S630 because it’s the newest version pretty much. It can play all CDR's which is good because I use a lot of burned CD's. I think there are other differences, but it being a brand new and current model made me want to get it. The problem I believe is that the unit was DOA as SCLJA said. I tried to bench test it and it didn’t work. That may or may not mean anything because its possible I was doing it wrong, but the bottom line is I couldn’t start it up on the bench. The place I bought it from said I could return it which I am going to do. SCLJA said that the S630 works in these cars and I trust him. The S620s are tempting because they are cheaper. And more than likely they will work just fine. But I’m picky so I had to have the newest version. The fact that it was brand new factory sealed was what really turned me on.

Thanks-

I agree on the newness and CDR issue as I burn, too.

Let me know how your situation turns out as I need something more than FM and tapes.

Best regards,

Okay, the place where I bought the cd changer from sent me a new unit. Although now I am thinking that the unit wasn’t bad after all. In any case, I have a new one.

-- IT STILL DOESNT WORK---

What’s the chance of 2 alpine units coming in DOA. While not mathematically impossible, it’s highly unlikely.

TomE500 has come up with an incredibly interesting link. I think that what article talks about could be what’s happening here.

The cable I have is an adapter from crutchfield, nothing more than a coupler with modified ends. No electronics.

I think I may have to try the blitzsafe. I wonder if crutchfield will take back their stupid cable.

Somewhere someone stated it was a 15 min process to add a cd changer to a mercedes when they were dealing with a qualified supplier of a cd changer for their mercedes. See this link............
It might cost more but it is tested and it works!
