Ham Radio Antenna
 

I am a HAM. I need to install an antenna in my 1987 300 td wagon. I dont want to drill holes in my precious Benze, and I hate mag mounts. Someone suggested removing the standard Mercedes antenna and puting the new one there. Can anyone give some ideas as to how to do this?

80 meters center fed dipole or 2 meter wip?

I installed a light duty trailer hitch on my E-300 td. Then had machine shop make a mount for me that fits on the hitch, you can get one here..

If you cant get it made up locally

The very large "Bug catcher style" antenna sits off the middle of the bumper and and works great.

One more reason the TD is a great car...no static on the radio!

Using a fender-mount I was able to install a 2m/220/440 antenna off of the front-fender bolt adjacent to the hood-hinge.

The antenna's coax passes through the factory firewall grommet.

there is amotorized antenna you can mount on a roof rack.... no drilling required.

or you can have a braket welded on the car that sticks out the back for an antenna.

The motorized one is nice because it can go up and down at the touch of a button, for when you go into parking garages.

I toyed with installing one of those "motorized" fold-over antennas on my roof-rack, but I came to realize that unless I STOP and consciously activate the fold-over, I was looking at big dollars should it become broken.

Hence the install on the front fender. On VHF/UHF bands, the antenna just barely sticks above the roofline. Also, make wiring easier and better hidden.

The glass adhesive antennas (for VHF/UHF) are a good compromise between performance and no damage to the car.
