Antenna removal for 220d

I recently became the owner of a fine 1972 220d with radio antenna mounted in right front fender. Does anyone know how to remove/reinstall a new antenna. The only access I can see is an openning about 1" diameter in sheet metal under dash that cable exits. I can see no access large enough to remove the bottom clamping nut for the mast assembly.
